What Was The First Track You Ever Had Played to You on a 'Proper' Hi-Fi That Got You Hooked?

Posted by: GraemeH on 13 April 2013

Mine was 'Lady Writer' played to me through a Rega Planar 3, Nad 3020 and Kef Coda's and I thought....wow! Never heard or 'seen' (imaging wasn't something I had ever experienced before) anything like that before.

The rest is very expensive history......(thanks David).

The 1st track by Ry Cooder on "Paris, Texas" from a high end LP12, I heard things I did not know was there!

I cannot remember the track, but a friend's parents bought a HUGE B&O Beogram - one of those that parents considered "a nice piece of furniture", and having been brought up on a diet of Dansettes this was incredible. None more so than hearing Mothers - We're Only In It For The Money with all that trick panning etc. It was, at the time, truly jaw-dropping.

My first proper turntable experience was at Graham's when I heard an LP12 (with a moving coil cartridge whose make I forget) playing Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone. Debbie was never so sexy!

Sad to say that for me it was Phil Collins in the air tonight (i know !), heard on the LP12 and Naim system.

A lot of progression since, but you did ask

It was Michael Jackson - Thriller, on a Rega Planar 3, Creek CS4040 and Heybrook HB1 speakers.

It was at West Midlands Audio in Worcester, probably in 1983.

That became my first proper Hi-Fi system and was eventually all part exchanged for Naim equipment a few years later.

As long as you know . . . .

..my first real hifi system was a Revox system with JBL speakers, and John Bonham was so real when we put the volume up - on Moby Dick (almost 25 years ago)

...then I had to change the system about 4 years ago, and came to the Naim family and had two remarkable experiences:

The Glass Prison - a very heavy progressive number from the album six degrees of... from Dream Theater, the bells sound quite real:

..and then switch to Jesseye and notice that you get a brilliance out you never had heard before - I didn't believe it was possible to hear it all in one system:

An LP12 pre Lingo - Ekos arm, can't remember the cartridge through NAC 72 / NAP 140 pulling the bass line out of Elvis Costello's pump it up. Managed to get a similar experience with my Nait 1 and so was happy.

Well you needn't on an original Riverside Monk's Music is what sold me on a Lingo.

A track by Sally Oldfield (Mike's sister). Played on a LP12/Nait/Kans setup at a HiFi store in Sydney in the early eighties. Ethereally good.

There had been many enjoyable and memorable Garrard, Wharfdale, Technics, Celestion & B&O (to name but a few) encounters, however, my first real dem (Naim, Rega & Epos) was listening to "It's all Gone" by Chris Rea.......

Hooked........!!

Waitress in a Donut Shop was the album.   The songs were "It ain't the meat it's the motion" and "Squeeze Me".

Yep, Communique is great. Those first three albums were special. Fell apart a bit from there, methinks.

Up from the Skies by Hendrix on headphones (which I'd previously thought were for crystal sets only), Garrard deck, no idea what the amp was.

Posted on: 17 April 2013 by Russ

Van Cliburn, hot off the press from Russia--Tchaikovsky--played on Rek-O-Kut with some vintage cartridge or other, into Sherwood amplifier into Klipschorn folded horns.  Never mind that the system would have cost more than my dear Mom made in a year!

Didn't he die about a month ago?  Showed the Russians how to play Tchaikovsky during the Cold War.  I heard him on NPR while driving through rural Idaho.  How's that for contrasts?
