Which remote to buy (Dac, NAC 52)

Posted by: Scarydog on 13 April 2013

Hi All,

Quite a while ago the dog ate both of my Naim remotes and since then I have been making do with a logitech universal. The logitech works but its control of the volume is very coarse. So, now that the dog has stopped eating things I am looking at getting a replacement remote.

Essentially I need to be able to control a Nac 52 and switch inputs on the Dac.

So my question is which remote should I get. I would love to get an R-com but I don't think it is going to work? Any suggestions?

I've tried two Logitec remotes including the 1100 and they were both rubbish. The 1100 in particular was very poor at doing smooth volume control for some of my devices. One of the biggest banes of their system actually saved me in the end because every time you make a change to the set up you then have to update the control via their crap online portal. Luckily for me this completely bricked the remote and I was able to get a full refund.

I have since been using controllers from URC and they have been superb. I've settled on an MX300 which is overkill for two boxes but is a fantastic controller. Lower down the range they are just as stable, hard wearing and reliable.

Something I didn't know until recently was that my Naim dealer does URC installations for customers who don't want to set it up themselves so they can support me in the future - which is the one tricky thing about URC. Not well established in the UK, not widely sold and not well supported (because they are not widely sold).

Should you be moved to discuss this with a dealer, might it not be cost effective to get a Naim remote? I don't know what they come out at.

Interesting. I love my Logitech Harmony One, and with the n-Vi which has a numeric/digital volume control there are no issues with one click on the Vol+ taking it up one.

I'm impatiently waiting for a HiCap to arrive for my 202 - will I have to abandon the Logitech to control the volume of the 202 do you think? The one mildly concerning thing I've read about the 202 is that volume control is not the easiest thing to control with finesse?

If it weren't for the issue Harry rasies I'd have happily recommend the Harmony One...

Mods - might not this thread promote a better discussion if on Hi-Fi Corner?

A personal dislike and a one in probably several thousand glitch.

Couldn't possibly recommend Logitec but I can see how many get on with them just fine. I should have finished my post with that.

Love their mice.

I didn't have any issues using the Harmony remote with my old 282 - the volume control finesse was the same as the standard Naim remote which in itself takes a while to get used to the quick taps so you don't end up advancing the volume too far. I'd try it first when you get the 202 and then decide. Mine's still going strong after 5 years and plenty of configuration changes.
