Does Naim spoil your other listening experiences?

Posted by: Cbr600 on 16 April 2013

Strange header i know

Yesterday took delivery of a CD box set ordered a while ago called "strangely strange but oddly normal", an island records anthology.

Spent last night ripping on the HDX and had a listen to a few tracks on the CD's, all super sounds, as expected.

Now, here's the thing, i decided to put the CD's into the car and listen to them on the way to work this morning. What a disaster, the sound was all flat and boring and was most painful

hence the header

Has your Naim set up in the home spoilt you for music quality to the extent that listening to music elsewhere such as a car or friends house, is no longer that much of a pleasure?

(unless you have a Bentley / Naim set up)

any thoughts?

No +1, happy with a Dynaudio Set in the car.

No.

Office system is SBT, Arcam rDAC, Arcam Alpha 9P, Dynaudio 52SE. Sounds great and gives me pleasure while I work at my desk.

It's not the system that brings me pleasure. It's the music that is played on it. Whether I enjoy another system at all depends on whether I like the music playing, not so much the gear.

I would hate my Naim system if someone came and played music I dislike on it.

No. I enjoy music anywhere. I choose to spend my quality listening with a decent hi-fi but if I'm in the car I enjoy my music too. I did used to spend time putting decent systems into my cars but factory fit is pretty good these days and so I don't bother doing that anymore.

Definitely no. Whether in my car with a Bose system, on old CB system or the radio in the kitchen it's the music that matters. These are all background music, the main system is for dedicated listening. Otherwise it's a waste of money.

I've got 2 vans with basic stereos in them and they sound fine to me. You don't get the quality of your naim set up but I still enjoy it. Even my roberts dab in the kitchen is good.

No. I can enjoy music on any rubbish system and I have a few scattered throughout the house and in the cars. But for immersion into deep musical enjoyment for it's own sake and nothing else, like watching a film or reading a book, I head for the lounge.

Tony, is the Alpine 20 a specific sound System? I have the HarmanKardon and am pretty dissappointed by this vs my previous Dynaudio kit in a Volkswagen.

It's funny but some cd;s sound better in the car than on a good system,Bob Dylan's ''Time out of Mind'' is a good example.

Law,

The A20 system(8 speakers)has a full bodied sound with a punchy but not overpowering bass. I think it is particularly suited to reproduce jazz or classical music ,although it is quite happy playing rock or drum'nbass. At one point I thought it sounded better than my Naim system(s). Silly me! I have not heard the HK or Dynaudio. Going back to the post,  the main thing is to enjoy the music!

Tony.

Top of the range CBR,fully loaded with all extras.

That said you need to see the other halfs car. Its a 15 year old Kia with 5,000 miles on the clock(genuine),never moves. Over the years we must have had half a dozen pikies knock on the door asking if she wants to sell it. She uses it once in a blue moon to drive to the shops and back,it would be cheaper for her to call a minicab.

Yes. But for the opposite reason. I'm one of those folks that just doesn't get on with the sound of CDs. Can tolerate them in the car but not through my Naim kit.

I'm quite happy to listen to music in the car and still enjoy it. However, having owned cars with various uprated sound systems (Bose and Harmon Kardon) in the past I no longer bother because, even though they sound rather better than the standard offerings, they can never be more than background.

Mind you, I was rather impressed with the Naim sound system in a Bentley that Steve Sells kindly demonstrated to me at the motor show a few years ago!

Interesting that many of you are focussed on the car sytem!

What about when you are entertained by friends and they put on the "Amstrad" system or some other Lo-Fi system?

Or some other setting with music? MFI shopping maybe

Hello CBR

Many years ago we had a VW LT28 delivery van and i stuck an Amstrad radio in it. It was the biggest piece of total and utter  crap i ever bought. If my old memory still works i think i replaced it with a Pioneer and that was spot on.

The car system is important because I spend a lot of my time there. Sometimes most of the day for consecutive days. I have a Logic7 system which for a car system sounds good, although in truth it's really a rubbish system which is not quite so rubbish as a lot of others.

I don't listen (much) to music on other people's system in other people's houses. My preference (if available) is to stay at home and listen to mine.

In car system essential, especially when on long journeys. I usually listen to Radio 4 but the first few notes of the Archers and suddenly anything else is attractive. Used to time my journeys on the M6 so that I hit that stretch through the Lakes where reception was lost just as the Archers started.
