"Travel Intrigue" Film Recommendations

Posted by: Naijeru on 18 April 2013

Lately I have become interested in thrillers that involve a man, a woman, transportation and a mystery! My collection of such movies is well worn out and I'm looking for new adventures. The films that rather capture the spirit I'm looking for are:

The Ninth Gate

The Bourne Identity

Charade

Frantic

North by Northwest

2 Days in Paris

The Limits of Control

Last Life in the Universe

Though several of the films I've listed take place in Paris, I have no preference for that city; it's just that several great movies have been made there. I'm more interested in European or Asian adventures and it's important that the protagonist be in over his/her head. As you may notice from my list however, there are exceptions to the rules. Being a New Yorker, naturally movies set in NY do not qualify.

Can any one suggest similar flicks?

Old, but fun: Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet in The Mask of Demetrios (or is it A Coffin for Demetrios? the film and Eric Ambler's novel have slightly different titles). Intrigue in eastern Europe between the wars. And the two leads are always a joy to watch together.

French Kiss

.....some great films in that list!

Thanks for the suggestions! The 39 Steps is indeed a great movie; I enjoyed it a lot.

Not quite faithful to the novel, this does remain [for me] the compelling cinematic presentation of the story.

Maybe not too much mystery (apart from what motivates them to go on their killing spree) but this is simply one of the finest movies ever made...

and there's a man, a woman and lots of travelling:
