Issues with Synology...

Posted by: Madrid on 22 April 2013

I know that Synology generally receives good reviews here, but I am beginning to question that assessment, and may need advice.

My DS212J suddenly stopped playing certain tracks two weeks ago.  Naim tech support (thanks Phil!) have been quite prompt in isolating the problem (eg, I can play the tracks using Asset on a PC).  Synology has been attempting to solve the issue, but after 2 weeks have not come up with a solution.

I am keeping fingers crossed.  If not, what should I do?

1) Could I install my Seagate hard drive (now in the Synology NAS) in another brand of NAS, and use a more reliable streaming software (perhaps Asset)?

2) What about selling the ND5, buying a Mac Mini with optical cable and forget about this streaming business?

There are so many variables . . . .

Have you updated the Synology Media Server (I'm hoping a newer version solves it)?

It's not clear to me that Synology's Media Server is "unreliable."  Certainly something is wrong, and I know it's frustrating when it's not easy to isolate and fix exactly what IS wrong!

ad 1.) No. A previous backup to a USB drive should be done. The Seagate can be reused but will need formating, which loses the data. Therefore the previous backup.

ad 2.) Get  QNAP in replacement of the Synology, or even a new Synology. Anything is better than a Apple product.

Can you elaborate on the problem you are having? Hang on there. There are many people running synology and if there is a real problem, I am sure a fix will be made soon.

I receive a "Can´t play skipped track", then "No track playing" error message.  It only seems to happen with tracks that I played between approx. 4 and 2 weeks ago.  Has anyone else had this problem?

I have not yet updated Synology´s DSM software from v. 3.2 to the most recent (4.2) because I don´t want to create another problem, namely loss of my hi rez albums.  (I understand from this forum that v. 4.2 still does not play high resolution tracks).

Keeping fingers crossed that Synology tech support will come through...

Hi

just some information for anybody using Synology.

i have been using DS213+ for approx 3-4 months now without these issues. Initially on version 4.1, now 4.2.

also, no issues whatsoever with high res tracks. Mine are all ripped to AIFF though so I do not require transcoding. I think there are many threads on here regarding the transcoding issue.

fortunately, I use mac so ripp everything to AIFF. I would expect if someone's library was WAV it should also work flawlessly.

so to be clear, no issues with 96 and 192 high def albums.

ATB, Anton
