The dreaded "Can't play" and "Skipped track" message

Posted by: d90myg on 23 April 2013

Hi guys,

I'm new here so apologies if I've missed this topic from before. I have run a search but nothing obvious came up.

I've ripped a few audio tracks from YouTube using a webapp called Clipconverter. This allows users to extract the audio component in its original 128kbps AAC format so the properties of the resulting files are:

Kind: AAC

Bitrate: 95-130kbps

Sample rate: 44.1khz

Encoded with: Lavf52.111.0

So far, no matter what I've tried to do, I can't get the files to play and I get the error messages in the title. I wondered if it might matter whether the extension was m4a or mp4, but changing this makes no difference and other files with these extensions play without issue.

Has anyone come across anything similar? The files play fine in iTunes and the vast bulk of my files continue to behave normally via Plex media server on the mac. I'm feeling my way gently with DLNA before committing to the full hardware setup...

Thanks for any tips you might have,

Michael

In my case, stopping all other music server apps (iTunes, Sonos, etc.) and deleting then reinstalling nStream on iPad eliminated conflicts preventing some files from playing.

Thanks Nick,

It's a problem when using the standard remote too, so I don't think this is an n-Stream issue. Worth a try though, so I've done this and sadly it doesn't solve my problem.

In case it helps anyone else reading this, it's one of the recent UnitiQutes. Suppose I could just re-encode with iTunes as those files all work, but not sure how much quality would remain!

Any other thoughts out there?

At 128kb already quailty is hardly an issue,

itunes wont ruin it anymore, could be worth a try just convert into mp3 though not point going lossless.

Well, re-ripping solved the problem. Obviously the Qute has a refined palate when it comes to its AAC files!

Hi,

I get the Skipped track cant play from files on my Qnap NAs. It has just started and I  have made no changes. the Nas is a Host on the DTC, i have restarted it to no avail. FIles on the UServe play no problem.

Has anyone struck this? and resolved it?

I have a similar issue when I queue files with different sample rates i.e. switching from hi-res to CD or vice versa my ND5XS will often skip the first track of the new sample rate. I'm transcoding from flac to 24 bit wav using JRiver MC18 and have tried tweaking the audio settings but don't seem to be able to solve this issue.

I am able to go back into the play queue and play the skipped track that way. Can you do the same or is your Qute completely refusing to play the files?

I am also getting the "stopped...cannot play" message.  If I play the same album / track using Synology DS Audio application from either my ipod or Android phone, there is no problem.

Very frustrating!

I don't see why re-ripping would solve the problem either.  If nStream could previously play the track why should it develop an issue?  The file won't change.  And if my ND5 can play the track using another software app, it must mean the problem lies in nStream, surely?

I also think reripping not the answer, in my case i have restarted again the NAS and so far all is ok, I m not sure why this work though, so dont know how to address for any future errors of the same nature.

Maybe you could check the "DMA-Compatibility" in the media server settings of the synology device. In the "device list" (last button on this tab) for my naim the "standard profile" (not sure about the exact name as my GUI is in german) is set.

I also had problems when trying to enable the audio transcoding on this tab. My uniti was not able to play high resolution flac anymore as I think the NAS was not able to transcode it correctly. (I have no checkboxes set on this "DMA-compat." tab.)

Maybe reindexing all the music files on the NAS could help? Did you try to update to the new synology DSM version?
