Looking for a quiet NAS
Posted by: CSI_Basel on 24 April 2013
I want to get a NAS as a backup to my Unitiserve and also to store my hires music. Since it will be in the living room I am looking for one that emits as little noise as possible.
Looking for comments from members as to whether they still hear them when everything else is silent?
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Synology DS112j is pretty quiet, if you don't mind the single disk version.
They are not quiet, you will hear one.
why does it have to be in the living room?
as an alternative for Synology, you might want to look at QNAP 219, or QNAP469

Synology is a great NAS; I have one.
However they are well known, in the relevant forums, for having fans that after a while (about a year and a half... approx.) becoming noisy, but to compensate they have great customer support. I had this problem and they sent me a replacement for all the fans.
However, it's not a great idea to have the NAS in the living room, whichever brand,; they are after all servers and by definition work horses to be kept and running in an adequate environment.
I have ReadyNAS v2 Duo. It and the US are in the listening room, albeit behind a door in a cupboard. Cannot hear either of them. This was my first NAS, I'm semi-illiterate on networking stuff, but have found it a piece of cake to set up and work with.
synology. have it in my living room and cannot hear it.
Synology produce excellent NAS.
Choose a model of Synology with larger fan, so that the fan can spin at a lower speed. This will reduce he noise of the NAS. The fan can also be easily replaced by a more quiet fan at a very low price. To check the noise of the NAS just google "synology <model number> noise level". You can also read reviews on NAS at this website:

The generic Upnp server is pretty good. You can also install minimserver in it after installing the java package.
Yesterday I set it up as proper backup share to my US, and will now try to simply unplug after full backup has completed. My hope is i can attach it once per month, the US finds it, and backup new music.
I dont think this is the intended way due to the daily automatic backup cycle on US. However dont have good options for placing elsewhere.
Any experience with that? Could also solve OPs situation

Where is your router?
i just dont get why anyone would put a nas in their living room. A living room implies there might be other rooms in the abode, so get it sorted, run some ethernet cable. Get a guy to run some for you.
you spent 2 grand on one peice of hifi but cannot think outside the box to serve it properly, i simply cannot get my head round that.
You could do something similar, and completely avoid the backup nas noice in case you cannot place it in a different room like me

In my caseI have my computer in my livingroom, and do not have a spare room for a nas, and with a Netgear Duo v2 I hear it only when I am not playing music, turn off my computer and listen for it. I waited to buy a nas until I was sure I could live with the noise and did not have to invalidate warranty
by replacing a fan.
