Flu Without Cold?

Posted by: GraemeH on 25 April 2013

Is it possible to have 'flu' without symptoms of a cold?  I ask as I've been laid low with high temp, aching joints and real weakness/fatigue this week but it hasn't developed into cough/runny nose.....yet.  It seems to be lifting though.

Anyone qualified to answer?

Thanks

G,

there are a load of these viral problems out there at the moment, my hospital is in constant "outbreak" mode.

Just sit tight and get lots of TLC

several Docs use this M/B....Dr Bruce,Steve J and Dr Mark + maybe a few others.

Its just a question of waiting to see who picks up your post 1st

unlikely they would give a professional diagnosis---for fear of litigation when your nose drops off in a few weeks. LOL.

I am not a doctor nor would I make a diagnosis. However, I had a flu shot this year--and got the flu. Apparently as in most years, there are multiple strains. Some people have mild cold-like symptoms. Others are laid low.

Who said flu has cold like running nose type symptoms?????

I had flu just once in my adult life, almost impossible to move, aching joints, feeling like (& wishing for) death, a fever that caused sweating like nothing I've ever experienced before (mattress was wrecked with sweat)    4 days of that, & then 3 days of feeling very unwell but with a receding fever.  Did not feel 100% for more than another 2 weeks.

Thereafter, whenever a work colleague called in with "flue" & returned to work after a day or two with the residue of a runny nose - don't kid yourself - it was a cold.

My flue did me a favour - I stopped smoking - like immediately - the smell of & thought of smoking made me feel ill - still does - & not a hint of the dreaded cold turkey.

Sorry to hear you're not well Graeme. The problem is with peoples interpretation of what flu actually is. A lot of people think they have the flu when they have a bad head cold. The symptoms Mike describes is fairly classic for influenza and to answer your question you don't necessarily have to have a runny nose.

Get well soon.

This is a sensible resource

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/dis.../facts/influenza.htm

A cold is a cold, flu is pretty different. Nobody gets 'a touch of flu'. Flu is 'orrible! Flu does not typically give symptoms like a cold, the main symptoms are high fever and aches/pains/fatigue.

I have the £50 note test.

There is a £50 at the bottom of the garden. if you have a Flu it stays there. If you have a cold, you get up and look for it.

If those cats were big enough or numerous enough to do that, perhaps only the lack of opposable thumbs kept them from completing the feeding mission themselves . Scary!

If you have Flu you wouldn`t be sitting by your pooter telling us about it!

IPad in bed...but I know what you mean.

Feeling better today....strange unspecific virus of some sort I guess.  Did feel utterly feeble though. G

Also, while i suffered that week in bed with the flu, the cats dragged in a £50 note they found at the bottom of the garden...

Debs,

Thank god you only have cats, and only one 50 note.

If there were 10 notes down the garden it would be a Pony !

A faithful, slobbering 100 pound dog could accomplish the task.  All for a mere pat on the head.
