Unitilite or qute

Posted by: Funk1600 on 01 May 2013

Hi everyone
I was planning to join the naim world , my current options are the qute with a nap 100 or unitilite.
They will be driving my pmc db1i bookshelves , room roughly 25 by 20 feet .
Main focus is streaming flac files.
I listen to alot of drum n bass , ambient , left field so i need very good control in the bass area , quality as opposed to quantity .
I was leaning towards the lite but its weight compared to the uniti 1 suggests a trimmed down power supply.
Will the lite be enough to drive the db1is considering their 87 db sensitivity ?
Will the qute with nap 100 give me better control than the lite?
I could also upgrade the lite with an external power supply in the future, would that effect driving capabilities?
what do you guys think?
Thanks!

Actually, I compared the two setups last week and bought the qute with the NAP100. I found this setup had a fuller sound. If you don't need the CD player, you won't be disappointed.

Best,

Michel

You can't add external power supply to UnitiLite.

You can add a power amp. I had a Uniti with a Nap200 and that would make a difference.

But it's getting costly.

I would have thought the Qute with a Nap100 would be best way to go if you are not bothered about CD replay.

Thanks for the replys !
Qute plus nap 100 looks good .
Anyone know the primary differences between the old and new qute apart from the higher resolution playback i.e 24/192 ?

I can get an ex demo uniti 1 for more or less the same amount.
Would that be better idea than the qute plus nap 100?

Even before I bought my Qute  9 months ago I always had and wanted to have a bit of reserve power. Although I was surprised and fully happy with Qute’s 30 watts , at the time  I asked my dealer  what would be the  benefit in adding Nap 200. His reply was that it would be an overkill and that if I was patient, than there will be NAP 100 coming out next spring. I did not believe him at the time, but now I think I will have to pay him a visit.

Well this review link is in line with Hi-Fi choice and other reviews , confirming the quality of this Power Qute.  I started slowly to move towards adding Nap 100. Still waiting for speakers to arrive to demo Nap 100 properly.

Hi, I'm using a Qute and 100, in my view, an absolutely stunning combination.

The Qute represents the greatest VFM for Naim gear. It's stunningly good for its modest 30 watts.

I will be sitting 10 to 12 feet away in a room heavily furnished which is roughly 25 by 20 feet , would the qute be able to deliver the naim impact ?
or the lite would be more appropriate?
need to drive my fronts for cinema duties too

The nice thing with the advent of the NAP100 is that if you find out that the Qute is not enough, you can add it at a cost which is not too high.

There used to be Hi Fi Fo Fum (935 Mt Pleasant Road) : Steve at 416-421-7552. Haven't heard about them for a while. Seem to remember Steve posting here not too long ago.

BTW, I had the Qute, but changed for the Lite, as it has a way with bass that just won me over. It may well be all you need.

I have an oppurtunity to buy a used uniti 1 24/192 version for an authorised naim dealer for the same price as a new lite, very tempting !
Should i pull the trigger?

Please, don't go shooting anything before you've had a chance to properly listen to both. The
better looking deal may not be the better sounding option. The UnitiLite is quite special, performing well beyond its price category. Its bass is very well articulated and may suit your listening preferences better, particularly for drum and bass.  But only you can be the judge, so an audition at your dealer (and a discussion with him) is the only way to help you decide... And ideally, a home audition with your speakers.

Haha ok ill try not to .
So what your saying is the lite may very well out perform the uniti 1 ?
I thought that the uniti had a bigger power supply than the lite , giving better control on high volumes.
I sure can demo the lite but the uniti 1 dealer is in another area.
Cheers

Jan may i ask which speaker is the lite driving and what are the dimensions of the room ?
Posted on: 03 May 2013 by Jan-Erik Nordoen

Amphion Argon 3 (87 dB @ 8 ohms) ; the room is 10' x 14' x 10' (w,d,h).
