World Wide Web 20 years old this week

Launched by a British computer scientist and designed for universities to share research, here's what the world's first website looked like
http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/?TheProject.html
By the end of 1993 there were over 500 websites. Today there are 630 million. Safe to say it has strayed from it's original purpose.
Wow. Congratulations, Al!
Long live the global republic!
One of the tree greatest inventions of all time in my view, the other two being the printing press and the plow.
Russ,
You can believe me or not, but when I posted this topic I fully expected an Al Gore comment from you and you alone. Congratulations on fulfilling my expectations!
joerand: No extra charge for that, actually. And always glad I could be of service. You are no doubt quite right that I would most likely be the only one to comment on this though. I suppose my doing so is somewhat unfair to Gore--after all, he never claimed to have invented the Web--just the internet itself, telling Wolf Blitzer (great name, isn't it) as he was preparing to become a presidential candidate:
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
Actually, Al has gone on to bigger and better things, now. When he left public service, he had a net worth of something like $2 million or so. His selfless campaign to have the U.S. solve climate change issues by unilaterally (among highly developed large nations) endanger its economy, has netted him a fortune somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 million--including of course, to be totally fair, the hundred mil he got from selling his company to Al Jazeera. But hell, who am I to argue with a perfect example of free enterprise at work? I couldn't help chuckling when liberal attorney and blogger Tamara Holder made the statement that Republicans are "fat asses", and God help me, this was the first thought that came to my mind:
But what's a little hypocrisy among those blessed with superior wisdom who lecture us about our "carbon footprint" while making big money off it and flying around on private jets?
But Joe, as to the web (and seriously) I have not yet decided whether it is a curse or a blessing. As an incorrigible old fart, I guess I tend a little more toward the former. But it sure is nice for finding virtually anything in a heartbeat--so long as one is careful. In any case, it is here to stay and I wonder what the next decade will be like. Good thread on your part--my going bonkers on Al notwithstanding!
Best regards,
Russ
