Having troubles with external HDD.

Hi all, I have a qute and trying to play from an external HDD but home screen comes up as empty. I just bought a WD my passport 500gB HDD purely so that I can transfer all my music not it and play them thru the qute. I have moved all the files from my back up HDD onto the new one, and when connected to my computer I can p,ay them thru jrivers so the files are there but the qute does not see them. All there is on the WD MY PASSPORT HDD are the files that came with it at time of purchase ( extra, locale,my passport apps for Mac,user manual,WD apps for windows,WD apps set up) and the one I created ( music) which is all my music in flac. Weird thing is that I just downloaded a a cd from hd tracks and copied it onto a small 2Gb flash drive and that did work straight away. Unlike the WD my passport, the small flash drive as no other files on it. So should I just delete the extra files on the WD my passport? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Froggy

Well, I now really see the potential of using the qute as a streamer, the way it was really meant to be used. I will go and buy a iPad mini and iPod touch so that I can use the nstream. I will also get a UPnP compatible nas with hopefully a cd ripper, so any advice on which ones work best with naim and less amour of fussy around will be greatly appreciated. Regards

Of course I'm going to suggest using one of our ripping / server products but if not then a small form factor dedicated Windows PC (for example, Maplin Electronics currently have a Dual Core 1.5GHz / 4Gb RAM / 750Gb HD Acer Revo L80 for £299 that should do the job very nicely) running Asset UPnP and dbPoweramp would probably be my next favoured solution.

Other than that - dbPoweramp on your PC and rip to something like a NetGear ReadyNAS and use the ReadyNASs' UPnP server (we've used these for years for demos and shows when we're not using our servers and they've been reliable plus they're cheap as chips!)

The iPad Mini is a *FANTASTIC* user interface to the kit ... the iPod Touch and iPhone are waaay too small and the iPad is too big to be comfortable but at £279 the iPad Mini is an absolute *STEAL* as a nicely built user interface component that really does justify its purchase for a dedicated role.

Why people want to control their HiFi from their phones (beyond "look, I can can control this from my phone") is difficult for me to get my head round in practical terms ... what do you do when the phone rings and you're listening to music? ... Do you reject the call to turn down the stereo and call them back or take the call, tell them to hold, switch to the control app to turn down the stereo and then go back to your call?

My workflow:

a) Use dbPoweramp on my PC for ripping

b) Use SyncToy to sync between my PC and a NAS (Synology) running in the laundry room

The sinology NAS comes with a upnp server that works flawlessly for me.

This automatically gives me a backup - my NAS did fall off the shelf once and both hard drives broke. The PC is the backup for the NAS and vice versa.

Mix the phone with the standard remote, or my special arrangement a bluetooth braille keyboard to control the DTC, fantastic since the dtc is even better to control the servers!

Hi guys, Phil, I kind of know you were going to suggest a naim product, and to be honest,I will indeed consider it when funds permit, as it s not exactly cheap is it? I still need to get a system for my living room where I have a pair of Martin Logan ethos speakers. I bought the qute not only it's capabilities but also as a gauge to see if I really like naim sound, and guess, what, I do. I love it, plus the fact that it works beautifully makes it even more interesting. For the living room, I will most likely get the nac 172 and the nap 250-2 or 300. I will get this system before I spend money on a naim server...but I ll get there in the end. In the meantime, Claus and shivoham, your ideas seem quite plausible at this stage and affordable. What s the biggest advantage of db power amp vs jriver? Otherwise, something that combines rip and NAS together may be an option for me. RipNas I believe do something like that but not sure of cost and usability with naim streamers.. Regards Froggy

Please note that I did spend much more of my reply giving you *MUCH* cheaper possible options - a RipNas will basically be running something like Asset and dbPoweramp under Windows Home Server or similar...
