NAS and HDX dissappear when wired Network used

Posted by: too old to rock on 05 May 2013

Have installed a new QNAP NAS and wanted to copy some files from Downloaded folder on HDX to NAS. Because of the atrocious speed I get when managing the transfer from my laptop on a wireless connection (abt 2mbps) I decided to plug in the wired adapter. Immediately I switched to wired I can no longer see the NAS nor the HDX.. Go back to wireless and they pop up again. (All connected via DrayteK Vigor Router btw) Suggestions most welcome

Is you laptop also wired to network?

sorry think I was not being clear. Normally I use the laptop via its wireless adapter. However as I wanted to copy a fairly large amount of files I turned off wireless and plugged the laptop direct into  the router and it was then that the NAS and The HDX were no longer visible on the windows & network browser. Think it has to be something to do with Network settings but not sure what. Naim desktop quite happily works even when  wired and the NAS is showing up as a UPnP device  when using wired connection but the two just dont show up as a networked file source.

Not sure of your issue, but probably right about the settings.

In my case i have the HDX and the NAS wired to a dreytek router, but my laptop is wireless connection to the network.

Works fine for me, and the data transfer is wired so better speed

Might be worth trying this !

problem solved - enabled WINS on the NAS and everything now visible when fully wired connections.

Unfortunately copying from HDX/Downloads to NAS still slow only 10 mbps compared with 45mbps from laptop to NAS but useable for the volume I have to copy.  Hopefully main backup from HDX to NAS which will run tonight will be faster as have some 1.4TB to copy
