Reasons for buying a particular piece of music

Posted by: Dungassin on 10 May 2013

I was sitting here thinking last night (SWMBO says "that's unusual"  ), and considering my recent music purchases, and why I had got them.  I came up with various reasons including :

1. Heard it on the car radio and I or SWMBO decided we ought to have a copy

2. Got a hankering to listen to an old tune, and found I didn't actually have a copy

3. One of my LP 'rips' had severe surface noise, and scratches (That's what you get for loaning out LPs), so I bought a used CD copy.

4. 'Completism' - which usually applies to classical music and investigation of other works by a known composer

5. A desire to hear the original version of some well-known piece.  The most recent example of this was me purchasing a Klaatu CD to hear their version of 'Calling occupants of interplanetary craft'

Why do other people buy?

Hello there, It's so easy to buy now. In between jobs I sit in my van having lunch or waiting for the customer to turn up looking at YouTube on my phone and hearing what people here suggest and I end up spending loads. Today I've bought 4 Blu rays, 3 CDs and 1 vinyl. As a heads up blockbuster are selling 4 Blu rays for £15 new. I think it ends today though.

I sometimes browse the Amazon recommendations on my 'home page' there.  Can occasionally be expensive.

Amazon are good. I also use play.com, wowhd, and discogs and go for the cheapest every time.

I am often review-lead. I read them in my newspaper, on Pitchfork and check out new album streams on NPR First Listen and the All Songs Podcast. Generally now I will have listened to at least part of the album online before purchase. Bandcamp (my music find of the year) is proving a fertile hunting ground. I love year-end lists and this Forum has definitely sold me some records.

I have two main drivers I think; a loyalty to artists I like already is one but the bigger one is curiosity. I really get the 'if you like this then try this' approach and it often leads me to new music and occasionally the odd new genre.

I would gues that about half of the music I buy is new, not just a new release but a new artist to me.

I rarely buy re-masters and have no completist tendencies!

For me multiple reasons:

1. My favourite artists - usally blind buys, with a little listening in;

2. explore further by bought buy, sometimes combined with extensive listening via spotify (I have a long wish list with Amazon :-))

3. explore in this forum or by reviews online or in magazines - combined with some listening experiences

4. completism (I have to admit)

5. visits to specialized CD shops with combined listening

6. stupid impulse buys....

Conclusion I am not always that proud of myself and I am getting more and more concerned by the innability of listening to it all.....
