Hi-fi thefts, do they still happen as often?

Posted by: Paper Plane on 15 May 2013

In olden days (ie pre-computers) I seem to remember that hi-fi theft was quite rife in certain areas. I had a Naim system of my own nicked in 1996 and heard several other similar stories.

I just wonder if the burglar community no longer bother with hi-fi systems, preferring computer equipment instead?

Maybe its the thought of having to carry multipe boxes and get a hernia in the process that deters the thiefs !

Not that the mainstream media would let you believe it, but in western societies, crime of most types has been falling steadily over the past two decades. Break and enter is one category that is much less common now than it was.

Back in the 90s I heard stories that burglars would break-in to steal stuff like the kids mountain bike worth 50quid, the VHS player worth 50 quid, and the black&decker drill worth 40 quid - but leave all the naim boxes behind.

The usual reasoning being the quick £10 resale return value on common sought after products sold for perhaps the next drug fix.

Naim audio boxes [90s olive] can be very ambiguous looking to many, very heavy too, and how could they explain a XPS box or hicap for sale to the average bargain punter down the pub?

I suppose it depends upon where one lives and the calibre of the criminal.

BOSE stuff is a brand that an opportunist burglar will readily pinch.... And probably doing the owner a favour at the same time!

I recall some years back there was an attempted break-in at the factory.  The thieves didn't get far and targeted a Plasma screen which they had to abandon before the police turned up.  They had obviously struggled with it and it had cost them the few minutes they needed to get it clear. However, if they'd done their homework they may have realised that right next to where the plasma had been there was an entire trolley full of 500 series kit which had been getting the once over by R&D.  Quite funny, yet also strangely disappointing.  Prime candidates for a Darwin award (if the police ever eventually catch up with them).

+1

And not really surprising on the Naim "non-theft"; they can sell the TV to almost anyone out there, but very few people, even at a bargain price, would know what to do with a 500 series amp, which woudl also be easier to trace.

Not that your thieves employed any of that logic in their dumb choice!

The last time we had a burglar break in the house he made a right mess all over the carpet.

Although nothing got stolen and my cats didn't need me to feed them for a week...
