Sbt. vs UnitiServe. How much better ?
Posted by: søren otzen kristensen on 20 May 2013
Hi. I am new in the naim universe, so i would like some advise please. I am looking for a upgrade from squeezebox touch to! I have tried Linn Majik ds(dynamik) and m2tech hiface evo, and i am now using sbt. I think the untiserve may be the next step, but how good a steamer is it! My dac is a Deqx Hdp-3 (also pre, active crossover ect.) Is it good idea or would i have to spend more on a super server!
kind regards

Hello Soren. I am in the States so cannot figure out how to type your name correctly
The UnitiServe is not a streamer -- it's a server. You can use it as a player, but really it is a server.

I use mine as a player, streamer whatever you want to call it and am very happy with it. I have now all my cd's on it and this is now my main source for listening to music. CD Player now in loft. I also have a NAS drive with 24 bit files on and the unitiserve streams all that music as well, if I want to play a CD the unitiserve will play these also....Listen to Radio, it does that as well. I do believe that this is one of the most versatile pieces of HI FI equipment that Naim have ever made. Add on to all that you have USB ports round the back of the unit to listen to files on USB Sticks and with the N-Serve app to control it you have a marvellous bit of kit. None of this would be any good if the sound coming from it was not up to scratch but the sound quality from this unit is bloody marvellous. Buy with the confidence that you can update this with new software from Naim so the unit is always evolving and always up to date
That is just about the same way i intend to use it. But what about the Sound! Is it true heaven, or is it the same as if i hot out and bought me a sonos..! :-)
Kind regards.
Kind regards.
Soren, I own a UnitiServe, and when I first bought it I used it as a player into a Naim Dac. I was quite happy with the sound! But quite a few people who post here are very happy with a Mac Mini as a player into the Naim Dac. I think that the dac is probably more important than the player.
Ok i think that the player is also importent for the Sound. I have played the same material with, linn Majik ds, m2tec Hiface evo and Sbt. useing the same dac, and i think the Sound is quit different! But what would like to know is if unintiserve is good or better player then what i had so far.
Kind regards.

The best way to answer your question is for you to spend a day with your Naim dealer and try all the options open to you and then decide whats best for you.
I love my unitiserve, not sure why I struggled for so long without it. The only thing I miss with it is mog, still need the sbt for mog.
