Is a Ripnas any good?

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 27 May 2013

This is doubtless a very dozy question, but I was wondering if anyone uses a Ripnas. I like the idea of a box where you pop the CD in the front and the box rips it and it's ready to play in a couple of minutes, without needing to touch the computer. Is it as good as a Unitiserve - you can get a 2TB Ripnas for about half the price of a Serve, but maybe it would be worth the extra if the Serve is hassle free and the Ripnas is a nightmare. I'm toying with the idea of streaming, but want to make the right choice - simplicity and reliability are the key.

Many thanks.

Yes. It should go via your modem/router rather than the SU's wireless. On your SU go to settings (spanner on remote)> then hit up on the circle of your remote to find factory settings> IP address. On your iPad in N-Stream, copy this number in settings to the IP address and all should be right with the world.....

(Will need to copy the IP Address and 'exit' so you can change n-Stream)

I'll give it a go. I'm waiting for some longer Ethernet wires. Luckily, they are cheaper than Hilines!! Thanks for the advice.

Now there is a first the words "inspirational" and "Morrissey" in the same sentence!

Congratulations on your new purchases, I'm sure you will love streaming once you have got the hang of it.  It is much simpler than it sounds and the Unitiserve will make things very easy.

You should consider backups though, ripping an entire CD collection is not great fun, but the pain is worth it considering the convenience that it brings.  It's something you only want to do once so I would recommend that you start thinking of this sooner rather than later.  A NAS drive is the obvious solution, it sounds like you have a friend that can help.  Once setup backups can be automated so you don't need to worry about doing them regularly.

If you have fixed the IP address of the SuperUniti, then you'll be fine permanently with this suggestion. If you have set your SuperUniti to obtain its IP address via DHCP (usually served by your router) then at some point the address is likely to change and you'll lose the connection from the iPad.

Either fix the IP address permanently on the SuperUniti or fix the name resolution issue causing the iPad to fail to reach the SuperUniti.

I think I'm being dim, but I can't see how to fix the IP address of the SuperUniti using settings, nor can I see how to enter an IP address into nStream. It must be there somewhere....

Hi, Nigel,

I do not know how to hard-set the IP on the SU, but I do know that you need to choose an address outside the range of addresses your DHCP server (which is probably your router) assigns automatically.  E.g. If your router automatically assigns 10.21.1.2 - 10.21.1.100, use an address between 101 and 250 to avoid conflicts.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I've assigned the SUniti a static IP address in the Draytek router (110) and rebooted both of them. nStream works happily without the SUniti being on wireless. I'm now listening to some music already on my PC and it sounds superb: so much better than music via the iPod. I can't wait to get the Serve now.
