Streaming from Unitiserve to PC via UPNP

Posted by: KRM on 27 May 2013

My main system streams from my Unitiserve to my NDX and this works very well. However, my thirteen year old son would like to get in on th action using the PC in his bedroom.

His laptop can quite easily see the Userve as a share on the network (eg \\198.168.0.2\music). Trouble is, the WAV files don't have much metadata so the PC can't see albums, just songs and folders.

The solution, I assume, is UPNP and I have managed to get Mediamonkey to do this but failed with Foobar.

Is there anyone out there who has tried to access their Userve from their laptop and, if so, what is the best way to do it with great sound quality and usabilty?

Hi, can you try and use a upnp client on your son's pc so he can see your US upnp server?

Hi Simon,

Yes, I managed to get Mediamonkey to work, but failed with Foobar after adding an add-in. Do J River and Audirvana support UPNP?

Keith, JRiver has a upnp client/control point. I don't know about Audirvana.

Just remember to try and rin only one controller on a device (ie per single IP address) at a time. I think some of the programs trip up over port numbers otherwise.

Keith,

I have been trialling the Dac-v1 with beta software from Illustrate (DBpoweramp)

http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/sh...poweramp-Renaissance

This is a UPNP Renderer and can be used with any DAC or PC sound output device.

http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/sh...?20897-Asset-Control

This allows you to access and play content from any UPNP server, gives full cover art and meta data to any UPNP renderer. So you'd point it at renaissance to play it back locally.

Hope this helps!

KRM - JRiver is a very good media player in its own right, so if your son's pc can 'see' the files on your UnitiServe you should be able to use JRiver as a straight player, (like iTunes but rather better).  It can also be used as a UPnP renderer, and indeed as a UPnP Server, but using it as a straight player might be better/easier if  firewall/networking issues allow. Its free for 30 days - worth a try I'd reckon.

Thanks chaps,

i think I'll give JRiver a bash. I've given up with Foobar.

I have just tried the Illustrate (DB PowerAmp) Renaissance & Asset Control. Very good, works well with a WASAPI driver to a DAC V1. It is quite light, I've always found J-River heavy. And it is free...

JRiver +1

I'm playing with J River at the moment. I don't want to do anything to the Unitiserve files. Is there a danger that J River will change or tag the files on the Unitiserve's internal hard drive if I or my family accidentally  press the wrong button?

The files on the uServe's internal hard disk drive created from you ripping cd's are in a 'read only' directory.  Without "hacking" into the system, you won't be able to change those files.  This is why you must use the nServe app to edit metadata and album art on files you've ripped onto the uServe.

If it's the newer 2tb version and thus has a Downloads directory . . . those files can be edited by JRiver, etc.

JRiver maintains its own database of tags - one of the reasons it can be so fast and powerful. Although this database is initially loaded from the tags in your media files, or derived from the directory structure, subsequently it is up to you whether any edited tags are written back to your media files. Changing tags by accident is not likely - you have to select a track, right click, select Tag and update the tags, and if your UnitiServe files are read only it won't allow you to, but if you want to be really really really sure you could go

Tools > Options > Library and Folders > Manage Library Fields

Select "Show only fields saved in tags" from the drop down box

and unselect the "Save in file tags (when possible)" button.

If you only use JRiver as a UPnP renderer you can't update tags through a control point in any case. If you want to experiment with using it as a player, why not copy a few files to the pc your using it on and just use those to play with?

Phew, thanks Bart,

The bloody thing errors when tying import the Unitiserve's files via UPNP so it's back to shares on the network. Is there a way of getting it to show music by folder, in the absence of album metadata?

You could try using as a straight player and just load your Unitiserve library into it.

File > Library > Import

In the absence of tags you can browse by folder - this is under the "Files" node of the Audio browse tree.

You can also get it to load its own database with tags derived from your folder structure, which will probably make things much nicer:

Tools > Library Tools > Fill properties from filename

Are you trying to use JRiver as a server, and the UnitiServe's store as the library for the JRiver server?  I kinda doubt that will work but I'm not sure why.

Hi Bart,

No, I'm trying to use J River as a client/renderer and the Userve as a server. I got a message saying it couldn't import anything and perhaps there was a problem with the server.

It's not too bad reading the the userve as a U:/ now that you chaps have helped me find the file node on the left.

Thanks again,

Keith

KRM - a coupla things. 1. The JRiver forum is very helpful, often a developer answers quickly, so if you posted the exact error message you're getting you might get some helpful help. 2. If you are using windows, why not fire up Windows Media Player - it should just 'see' the Unitiserve as a UPnP server and let you play from it. If WMP works and JR doesn't you'd know that JRiver is the issue; if they both don't work then it's more likely the issue is with the network/Unitiserve
