thought it was time i posted a new thread. here are some interesting old photos, that show some iconic moments, or are simply thought provoking. This is not intended to compete with the nice photo thread, and is not listed for its high quality images, just a series of old and interesting images.
Hippo cart in 1924. The hippo belonged to a circus and apparently enjoyed pulling the cart as a trick

Yeah, you simply can't get colours like that nowadays with these new-fangled computers. Oh wait, hasn't it been digitally scanned, and aren't I looking at it on a computer? Never mind.
Actually it is a great bit of footage. Really nostalgic. I really enjoyed it.

As it's Wimbledon fortnight, here's a 1921 picture of what one presumes is the equivalent of today's Murray Mount/Henman Hill:

Sorry to divert the thread a tad, but on "Wimbledon fortnight" there is one picture that stands out above all others!

Here's the old Pyke's Cinematograph Theatre in Balham High Road (opposite where Sainsbury's now is), shot in about 1914. The building stood until 1983.

At one time, Balham had no less than four cinemas - Pyke's, the Gaumont, the Odeon and the Palladium. Here's the old Gaumont Empire (also once a music hall), closed down in 1970. The parade is still there (no longer a cinema, obviously)

Here's the Palladium next to the station in 1915, which was destroyed by a bomb in the Blitz.

We even had a very grand theatre, The Royal Duchess, built in 1899. It was another casualty of the Blitz, remaining derelict until the 1960s, until the present-day Balham Hill Estate was built.
