thought it was time i posted a new thread. here are some interesting old photos, that show some iconic moments, or are simply thought provoking. This is not intended to compete with the nice photo thread, and is not listed for its high quality images, just a series of old and interesting images.

25 years ago today, the Soviets bid dos vadanya to Afghanistan...

Just for transliteration correctness (because I used to think the division was just as you do) it would be properly: "do svidaniya" - до свидания

Or you could also go with "AMF" which is I'm sure the overriding sentiment for the troops as the left.

Too bad another country didn't learn from their experience...

The average US TV viewer today wouldn't make it through the first minute of that skit.

Might not even recognize the music...

1920's Selfie.
This made me smile.

Side view of photographers posing together for a photograph on the roof of Marceau's Studio, while Joseph Byron holds one side of the camera with his right hand and Ben Falk holds the other side with his left hand.

The greatest and a true inspiration but I don't recall him fighting those two?

Yes, definitely 50 years. Cassius then.

Despite being in the favorable position to receive that jab, Paul seems to have taken the worst of it while George appears quite content with it.

“When The Beatles returned to America in August, 1965, for their second tour and played the Sullivan show again, I got one of my favorites. Walking the aisles, one audience member caught my eye: an older man sitting with his fingers plugged in his ears to mute the high-pitched squeals. As I moved in for this terrific shot, I got a closer look and realized I was photographing the legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein.”
- Ken Regan

Ken Regan was a Sullivan Show photographer.

Interesting quote. The photographer assumes Bernstein was plugging his ears to mute the squeals. Maybe it was for The Beatles.

I don't think that to be the case as I recall Lenny seemed to had an affinity for some Beatles' tunes. I can't find the rest of the YouTube but it was fascinating to see Lenny deconstructs a few Rock'n'roll tunes.

A great shot of young Lenny 1947 by Irving Penn. ( one of my favourite photographer )

I particularly like a cigarette butt on his foot.

He's a bit Glenn Gould-ish

Fab pics Kuma.

In the same vein, I really like this hand-coloured image of the newly-opened Eiffel Tower in 1889:
