Unityqute unsupported file format

Posted by: Rob on 07 June 2013

I just received a preowned unityqute & I am getting "unsupported file format" notice on alac files. Utilizing wireless to NAS. All works well with my ND5XS on same network. The Unityqute has software version 3.0.

If I update the software will the unityqute play alac files?

Thanks

If I recall right the 24/192 board is needed to play ALAC format files i.e. if the device you're having is a 1st gen one with 24/96 board the firmware update is not enough. However, I might be wrong about this (I have not tried ALACs myself).

Thanks Osprey.

Osprey is right.  The first gen 24/96 did not support ALAC and needed the upgrade board in order to support ALAC files.  I have a first gen without the upgraded board.

+1

I had a first gen Qute, which did not support ALAC, nor 24/192 in any format. It's part of the reason I traded in for a ND5 XS after I got a NAC202. It can be upgraded. Cost is $400 in the US.

Rob,

if your UPnP server will transcode formats (convert on the fly) then you can have it convert your ALAC files to wav for the UQ.   This would work well for the ND5XS as well.

That would be unnecessary for the ND5 XS. It supports ALAC natively.

The 24/192 units do support native ALAC decoding and playback up to 24/96 however if your UPnP server can decode to WAV before sending the file to the player then you will get an improvement in quality as we then don't have to decode in the player hardware and can throttle back the digital processing that is done within the player which does bring sound quality advantages.

Best

I had a first generation UnitiQute and it did not support streaming ALAC files.  I had to convert them before streaming. I even remember when NAIM announced it was adding support for ALAC via a software and hardware upgrade, for $400 in the U.S.

Correct - the first generation UnitiQutes were the original 24/96 streaming hardware which did not support native ALAC playback ... the later 24/192 units would be able to natively decode and play ALAC files up to 24/96.

Right, and read the OP. I believe that is what he has.

Thanks all. Contacted local dealer & the board is on order.
