NAC N172XS

A few questions:

1. Is there a way of displaying albums sorted chronologically (rather than alphabetically), by Artist?

2. It seems the Android n-Stream app will sadly not be available for a while. What other apps are you having success with. I use Bubble, but it seems to conflict with the 172's own controls. I'd particularly like it to display the tracks I'm playing either from albums on my NAS, or internet radio, streamed from the 172. I have selected the 172 as the renderer and my NAS as the server, but the display of currently playing is very hit and miss.

3. I maintain my album library on a Netgear ReadyNAS using MediaMonkey Gold, but am not sure of the best way to create playlists which will be picked up by the 172.

Overall I am very happy with the 172, I was slightly sceptical as it replaced a NAC112 which used a Flatcap2, running into a NAP 140 (can't find any reason to replace it!), but it is a step forward both in sound and future proofing. The speakers are Credos.

#1: Is nothing that is due to the NAC-N 172 it depends on your setting the dlna server!

#2: I have used as a test Kinsky and it works as far as I remember.

Many thanks - as usual that prompts a further question! My NAS is a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo, and I'm currently just have ReadyDLNA enabled as a streaming service. Would there be an advantage is using an additional or other streaming service such as Home Media Streaming Server. Where would one change the settings on ReadyDLNA?

Thanks - I'll take a look at Kinsky.

The Netgear ReadyNAS uses MiniDLNA if I recall correctly. This is quite a simple (read limited) UPnP server.

I believe that MinimServer can be installed on the ReadyNAS and would recommend you try that. It's very versatile and can be configured in many ways to allow quite powerful access to your music.

There's another thread running on this (ReadyDLNA vs Other Servers).  Minimserver can't be installed on ReadyNAS Duo v1, but it can on v2.  You can find a fuller list on the Minim site.

Philip - I have a v1 Duo, and as far as I can see, there's nowhere to configure ReadyDLNA.

Thanks Eloise and Gavin. Ragman's suggestions led me to configure MediaMonkey to stream its library, which I can now access happily from the 172. This is good as it keeps the number of components to a minimum and I already use MediaMonkey to rip, and manage my library, and it's very good with playlists.

Now I just need to resolve my original question with MediaMonkey itself - how to sort albums chronologically by artists, but the MediaMonkey board is clearly a better place to deal with that.

Still keen to find a reliable way of using Android as a remote controller for the 172 though, MM has an app, but as far as I can see it won't render to the 172, just to the Android device.

@Philip,

didn't know MediaMonkey but with JRiver you can be extremly creative in creating you libary and metadata and as well the or some dlna servers.

You can download a test version. Later it costs.

Philip - I'm presuming MediaMonkey is installed on a PC, not the NAS, and that you have to have that PC on for streaming to happen.

That's right Gavin, in the unlikely event it isn't the default position would be ReadyDLNA on the ReadyNAS Duo, so I'm quite happy with that.

It's really just getting to grips with the usability - looking at a tablet is preferable to viewing the 172 screen over the other side of the room!
