Heads up Nick Drake Five Leaves Left

Posted by: Steve J on 11 June 2013

Having just received the Bryter Layter reissue LP which is very good I noticed that Amazon have the upcoming Five Leaves Left LP on preorder for £10.74. It's due for release on August 26th.

Nick Drake and FLL:

Picked up my copy the other day and just playing it now.

Overall I am impressed and I like the SQ as it has more depth, the guitar & piano playing and orchestration flows even more. And Nick's vocal is less boxy than I have on other pressings.

Nice and good so far but the penultimate track on side one has some clicks and under close inspection has a slight surface defect so I may have to send it back to Amazon (which is dead easy with a local collection point and painless).

A few static pops on side 1 which I think an RCM would sort...if only I had one......whilst side 2 is very quite.

I have had confirmation that my £10.66p vinyl pre order of Five Leaves has been dispatched today.

Thanks to Steve J for the heads up way back in June.

Well it's finally arrived and, despite some reports of noisy pressings, mine's a peach. Nice silent vinyl and well centred. Like all Nick Drake albums I wish they could have been purely acoustic, I find the strings a bit intrusive sometimes.

Out of interest those that paid £10 on amazon did you receive the boxset or the single record. Mines due or delivery this weekend. Hopefully it's the boxset.

For £10.66 you get the gatefold LP not the box set. The pressing is very good.

They've not put the 24/96 download up yet. I only see the MP3.

But River Man and Thoughts of Mary Jane - unsurpassed string arrangements!!

I'm put off from buying this by reports, on Amazon, of the mastering process (not using analogue tapes as expected etc). Maybe it's not so important though.

Either way I'm keeping my first pressing pink label....

Cool that means mine should arrive soon then. Thanks

I bought my copy at HMV for £14.99. It looks pristine and is absolutely silent until the music starts. Really fine copy. No idea what it's like compared with the original pressing. A friend has an original copy but he hasn't compared yet (he has both).

Incidentally, his new copy looked like it had streak marks on it, but a quick clean on oour Monks RCM sorted that out. The vinyl plays beautifully and silent too. No idea where the streak marks came from.

Oh, and we compared my vinyl to the remastered CD and intiial impressions were that the vinyl was far richer and deeper than the CD, but it was just a quick blast. Sad, the download is only MP3, should be 24/96 like the others.

Regards,
Frank.

The download links have been updated so the 24/96 FLAC and the dubbed from disc MP3 versions are available now.
