Gert, Computer Science pah...    At University us Computer Engineers shared many of the same modules as the Computer Scientists, but they never got involved with electronic and digital design and construction  modules where of course us Engineers learnt about EMI, RFI logic gate noise, race conditions through unclean or ringing logic transitions, clock modulation, small signal theory  etc... That is the area we delve into when we hear audible differences between WAV and FLAC, SPDIF leads etc on playback...

If there is a difference between Wave and Flac (minor if any in my experience), the real determining factor is the genre of music. A more involved symphony is more susceptible to artifacts in compression in comparison to a 3 piece teenage combo.

Hi Gert,

I come from a scientific background, but with HiFi I've just trusted my ears for years - even though I suspect that they are FAR from being a constant as I have aged!

Robko,

Personally I have found the difference for me to be the human voice, regardless of genre.
