Most under rated British band of all time.

Silly idea but interesting. I would put forward Man, an amazing band!

Any body agree or suggest others?

Syd Barrett & Peter Green (under rated in relation to the later incarnations of bands they originated). G

Under rated band Graeme. Pink Floyd were hardly that. Syd was certainly a troubled genius, like so many of that time.

You cheater Graeme! You edited after I posted!

Funny though, I was going to mention Peter Green as another troubled soul but he was very highly rated at the time he was with Fleetwood Mac, not only by the public but by his fellow musicians. He played on many non FM albums during that time.

Our posts crossed Steve whilst I thought about what I was actually trying to say. G

Porcupine Tree

I'd second porcupine tree they are amazing. And thanks to people on this website I found out about them.

I disagree about Porcupine tree ( think cat and pidgeons ), I find Stephens voice thin and weedy and some of the lyrics are iffy, don't get me wrong, I am a fan and have seen them live and thoroughly enjoyed the gigs. I think they are good but not underrated.

For me its got to be my favorite punk band The Adverts. I guess they are well known in the UK but not really in the US.

Agree, as a live band they were superb, just listen to Spunk Rock on Greasy Truckers Party.  Saw them so many times, every concert excellent even in the 90's

would also add Nektar, British Band based in Germany, toured often with Man and Hawkwind.  Great live show and also some excellent albums, especially Remember the Future

Finally too my mind the most underrated and ignored band-Gentle Giant- how they did not get the acclaim that Yes and others got defies logic-musically well ahead of the pack.

Another vote for The Sound. However, I'd also go for Slade. Characterised as a singles band and yet never made a duff album in their original incarnation and made several that stand the test of time very well indeed.

Patto - great singer, great songs, outstanding guitarist (Ollie Halsall)

Good choice. And their predecessor act, Spacemen 3.

Can we be clear about "under-rated"? All these bends were certainly not critically under-rated at any point. Do we then mean "under-purchased"?

"Under-rated" to me means outside of the "canon" - so not the Fabs, or Zeppelin, or the Velvets, etc. The Velvets are very much part of the canon, and very highly rated, but they're definitely "under-purchased" in the sense that their sales figures are still pretty low.

Oddly, it could be said that The Beatles are underrated, because it is impossible to underestimate the quality of their music and the influence they exerted.

Sailor and the Groundhogs as somebody already said.

I agree but think you mean 'impossible to overestimate'.

It's puzzling that Archive have remained so under-appreciated in their home country.  Not sure whether they are the most under-rated British band of all time, but they certainly qualify for inclusion here.
