Most under rated British band of all time.

Silly idea but interesting. I would put forward Man, an amazing band!

Any body agree or suggest others?

+1 for Archive. " You all look the same to me" and "Lights" are great albums. And being canadian, I have to put The Dears in this list.

I have a feeling it has a fair bit to do with their original contract being with Warner France - so being heavily pushed on the continent (where it has to be said - they are exceedingly popular) and getting zero publicity here in the UK from promoters.

Shame - they deserved far better.

New deal, new contract and already a few gigs under their belt here, but I fear it may be a little late for them here now.

Oysterband , an excellent live band and their albums ain't too bad either.

Posted on: 30 June 2013 by Massimo Bertola

If they can be considered a band, Godley&Creme.

After 25 years, I'm still amazed at the indifference for their absolutely stunning work together, their clever lyrics, the musical richness. When I listen to their songs, most of their contemporary pop/rock sounds like illiterate amateurs.

+ 1 for Gomez and Caravan, and I'd add Stackridge. Still together and still

writing and performing terrific material.

Would have to say - Marillion

Widely acknowledged as pioneering the drive of using the internet to drive a new relationship with their fans in the late 90s (before Radiohead and the like jumped on the bandwagon).

Probably one of the finest rock vocalists around at the moment in singer Steve Hogarth.

Continue to drive an almost cult-like following amongst the fanbase

Brilliant live performers.

Musically, have continued to produce powerful album after album.

For anybody that hasn't heard them or of them, give the latest album Sounds That Can't Be Made a go....

Cheers

Max, Godley and Creme!!! I'm a fan but I would go for the original 10cc. 4 cracking albums.

Well, maybe not THE most under rated band, but Gravy Train (in places) were as melodic as the best King Crimson.

+1 for Marillion and I agree about Steve Hogarths vocals, although I think his voice takes a little bit of time to get used to especially when you have grown up with Fish. My favourite album is Marbles but every album is strong and well worth listening to. Their sound has matured and is very satisfying.

Best

For me it is TV21, a local band that I first came across as the support act for the Undertones back in the early '80s.  One of those memorable gigs where the support turns out to be much better than the main act. Their album Thin Red Line still get regular play time here at home and captures the anger of the era perfectly. A wee gem.

The Only Living Boy In NewCross.

I was living in New Cross at the time and saw them at the New Cross Venue, quite brilliant live and for their no nonsense sound, delivery and grass roots politics and wit.

Hi Donald,

Yes, very occasionally. Were you that tall drunk chap who stole my Old Hoburn Tobacco one evening and would not give it back

I drank in the New Cross Inn more often and this was around 1991-1994. I also saw Linford Christie win the 100m Olympic Gold in this pub in 1992. A friend and I used to go to the Venue almost every week, or at least when some good bands were gigging. They used to have the NME young "up and coming" bands there once a year....I think. The Venue was a fantastic littrle gig place, a real gem in New Cross. Great times...I really enjoyed my time living in Pekham and South London.

Cant see the Dewdrop on Google Earth at the moment though, is it still there?

Were you there at this time Donald?

Jason.

Hi Jason

I was there from about 93 to 97, I used to drink at the New Cross Inn occasionally, they would have bands on so we would all go up. My memories of the Venue are vague ( stop it ) but myself and a few friends had not very nice experiences with the bouncers so we stopped going. Maybe you might remember some of the characters from that era, Pat, ( double mohican and tats) Wattie ( louder than life Scot with a mohican ) Rob the goth ( also known as Doctor Bob ), Colin Sutcliffe, Suds, Al Miller, Ritchie Rut? They all would drink at the Dewdrop, New cross inn, Birds nest and the Goldsmiths, They were all in that area from mid to late eighties up to about 96, The Dewdrop changed hands, became a gay bar then sadly closed a couple of years later and is now flats.

One other question, Did you ever go to Slime light nightclub in Angel. That was a blast.

Regards

Donald

Oh and by the way it wasn't just tobacco in that pouch, was it lol.

Posted on: 09 July 2013 by Jasonf
Hmmm! How funny.

I don't remember these guys by name...or face, but I am sure I spoke to them at some point. My mate had a single yellow mohican at the time, then dreds.

Well, after Peckham, I moved to Holloway Road then Stoke Newington, so Upper Street was my local haunt for 5 years. I never went to the Slimelight (I dont think), but I went next door to the Candid Cafe often...and I think there was a Paint Ball venue at the end of Torrens street in the old warehouse there where I once did that for someones birthday.

Wow, old time good times!

Where are you based now, Donald?

Jason.
Posted on: 09 July 2013 by Jasonf
Oh, the Medicine Bar (now Albert & Pearl) on Upper Street was my usual drinking den then.
