Unitiserve and classical music rips
Posted by: Stover on 22 June 2013
How do you owners experience ripping classical music and especially boxes with the US? Does the rip create a lot of work on the desktop client afterwards?
Currently I rip to WAV with Mac/ XLD. I edit before extracting. If I discover faults in metadata after ripping, I can edit in the NAS structure afterwards, but it won`t show changes in n-stream.
Will US purchase solve this issues?
I use Synology DS212J. Sources are NDS (in delivery) in the main system and Qute2 in the living room. I guess the two streamers could be a reason for using US also?

I was wondering the same thing. How will the Serve cope when I rip my 15cd Angela Hewitt Bach box? I hope I won't need to spend hours fiddling around afterwards.
Steinar, if you create rips using non Naim solutions, the files are scanned by the upnp server after ripping such that the server builds its database, if you should then change the metadata on the file itself after this scanning this will typically not be refected in the upnp database (and therefor Nstream, NDS etc) unless you tell your upnp server to rescan the files.
The Unitiserve uses a different system. When it rips the CD, it directly puts the metadata into its own database thereby bypassing the storing metadata in ripped file stage. Therefore to correct metadata with the Unitiserve you need to use the provided specific Naim software for doing this directly into the naim database on the unitiserve.

Simon, you are a bit of a genius on all this. I may be inviting you for a weekend in Emsworth!!!!
Agreed with HH, and thank you Simon
Edit!
If I understand this correctly with XLD, if any "faults" in metadata that has to be changed, I can update the UPNP in the NAS, and don“t have to rerip the cd?
I was told to try "clear cache" or something in n-stream, but it doesn`t help. I will search for how to refresh UPNP.
I know US will also demand some editing, but know it will be quite easy.

I may be the typical user that should go for a Unitiserve. Spend parts of last night reading the Synology manual and changed some settings. Googled for any help, tried clearance and resets, but I still can`t synchronize NAS folder structure with what`s shown in n-stream. I have managed to make it work and al is fine, except from the edit issue.
Any Mac/ XLD users that can help? Feel I`m very close now. On the other hand, I cannot live with this solution if it`s not meant to be editable AFTER ripping.

I`m strickt on that WAV is my format and it`s consequence is that editing metadata become restricted. I understand thats the answer to my question also.
I therefor have decided to go for a Naim ripper such as Userve or NS01. Since I have the Synology DS212J that leaves me to go SSD.
I have read several posts here regarding issues connected to the US and wonder if NS01 is more reliable? Some also predict NS01/ HDX give better UPNP replay for the streamer. Is it so that US is for use with Naim lower series streamers and NS01/ HDX higher up? I guess that must be if need of the analogue section, in wich I don`t need.
I admit I have made this difficult, but I want to make it right the first time.

Hi Steinar,
The only issue I've encountered with boxed sets of classical music is the album artwork, which on occasion differs within the set. This is easily corrected from within the nServe (or nStream) app.
So, not a lot of work at all.

Not necessarily. As mentioned in the "To NAS or not to NAS" thread, the U/S HDD will see the NAS as a music share.
Also, there are differences in the sound quality between the two versions of the U/S. Try to compare both at you dealer to see which you prefer. Some reading here from HiFiCritic.

Connection issues are generally network related and not device related. I've not compared the SQ of the U/S vs NS01 vs HDX, but others here have and report slight differences. Playback through UPnP levels the field quite a bit though and through the U/S is exceedingly good... certainly good enough for Naim to use in their demos of their reference 500 series and Ovator S-800 at the last Montreal HiFi Show !

There are no reliability issues reported with the U-serve 'unit' as far as I know. As Jan says, any queries tend to be network related. The U-serve is robust and reliable in my experience so buy with confidence.
Jason.
With the ns01 you get a fullsize Naim box, maybe lower noise from the disks, a "normal" power supply not the external switchmode you get with the Userve, and 2 disks instead of one in the Userve. I do not believe that there is a ssd version of the ns01. Of course if you do not need the analog out this is redundant, you pay for something you do not need.
It is still more or less a computer, so much will depend on the life of the components and if Naim will be able to replace components in the future with pc parts that evolves almost daily.
Jan, Jason, Claus- Thanks a lot. This was helpful indeed.
The thoughts on NS01, when alalogue section is not to be used is a bit Hi-fi paranoia I guess.
Just have to treat it that way.
Will sort out if SSD or HDD.

I think I have reached my goal now with Naim boxes. Just ordered a Unitiserve HDD from my dealer. Thanks to all for helping me make the decision. I am willing to pay for convenience
