Glastonbury or other Festival?

Posted by: Tony2011 on 25 June 2013

I hardly hear people talking about going to festivals in the forum. Just wondering if it's a case of been there, done that and got the T-shirt  or  are were all getting too old for that kind of stuff?

But we have to presume the meaning of ATB?

Unbelievable George, worthy of an autocrat, truly.

And how many times have I written in full, "All the best" ?

Enough to get it!

But MT, I thought possibly, Mike Taylor, or Mike Townsend, or a complete guess!

In the context of signing off, what guess-work is involved to understand the meaning. Watch out for dusty posts that end without ATB! What else might be meant other than "All the best," unless there is a paranoid suspicion of a great subtext - unfounded of course - in my positing.

All the best from George

Actually I thought he just decided to leave one day and the others were a bit perturbed.

That's what Keef said anyway.

Thought MT wasn't as on it as the London show that's been on youtube for a while.

Not bad but I did see them in 1971. After queuing all night in the snow.

The Mike Taylor I was thinking of was an orchestral bass player!

Best thing I've seen thus far have been Alabama Shakes and Portishead, although I did enjoy the Friday/Saturday headliners, Arctic Moneys and Rolling Stones. I also liked Savages - their singer reminded me of a female Ian Curtis.

Low spot by far has been the inane Jo Whiley, quite possibly the world's most irritating woman.

+1 Savages.

I am watching highlights now here in Oslo on the BBC Entertainment channel.

The unremarkable Rufus Wainwright covering Jef Buckley covering Leanord Cohen's Hallelujah...why bother with such a mundane vocal style?

I don't get the Wainrwights at all.

I've just watched four minutes of the loathesome Mumford & Sons, surely the lowest point of Glasto's 43 year history.

Nothing but twee wanky whiny hedge fund folky ponce shit for annoying middle-class girls who live in Clapham and their gittish banker boyfriends. Switched 'em off already before I kick the telly in. Tossers.

Go on Kevin tell us what you really think??

Could be worse you could be listening to the incredibly boring XX.

Frist time I heard Ben Howard...I liked him...but alas, now here comes Vampire Weekend and what a  terrible name, and they have a track called 'A-Punk' .

This is a very good example of how a band can be so blatant in their attempt to suck the lifeforce from good honest rock/pop and the kids...apalling stuff.

Watching 'em (The XX, not M&S who are pants - geddit) now Howard, and am enjoying them immensely.

My mate who's there just texted me to tell me Nick Cave was awesome so I will check him out later. And Bobby Womack's on BBC4!

Highlights so far for me

just caught 3 songs from the Smashing Pumpkins , auld billy has been dodging the salad recently but still sounds good to me,

Dinosaur Junior ,, went through the singles , good set , sound not brilliant though

Billy Bragg was good , not sure he should of been on the introducing stage,,

Daughter ,, interesting , graet sound , not heard them before

watching the XX now, not sure if i lile it or not,,, the choreographed daning and guitar playing is mildly annoying.. i would imagine that there atmospheric sound is more suited to indoor venues.

as for mumford and sons , only suprise is Kevin lasted a whole  4 minutes before switching off, but agree  total drivel , i heard one bit of jangly giutar and turned over.

I have to say, The XX's minimalist lighting design is excellent, and most effective.

In retrospect Tony, I have to admit I was a bit soft on them. Next time I will really put the boot in.

They make Coldplay look like Einsturzende Neubauten.

Just leave the Kraut rock out of it Kev.  You just need a little help...

A good dose of Throbbing Gristle later on will cleanse my mind and ears of the M&S horror Tony, and all will be right with the world again.

I have been to Latitude 2 out of the past 3 years. I go for the "glamping" option because I prefer decent showers and toilets. It does get expensive though. I would say that at 56 I am certainly not too old for that kind of thing.

Just back from Glastonbury and absolutely loved it. There was so much excellent music - as well as the obvious highlights, Steve Winwood and First Aid Kit were very special. I date back to the 60s/70s festivals as well as earlier Glastos and it's better than ever.

I did stop going in the mid 80s when lack of security/fencing made it a bit dodgy but it's very safe now and there is so much on that you can basically build your own festival. BBC coverage is good but there's no substitute for being there!

The last rock festival I really enjoyed was the first Caravan reunion in Mt Ephraim Gardens, a totally amateurish affair with no camping on site. The PA sounded like WW3 until the Groundhogs managed to tame it, all the stalls were run by local small businesses and the Beer ran out by 6pm but a great festival. The next year they did a much more professional job with all the security and cattle pens we've come to enjoy in recent years, the usual rip-off festival catering etc, everything worked but the spirit had got lost somewhere.
