N-Stream volume control

Posted by: The Meerkat on 25 June 2013

I have just purchased a ND5 XS, and downloaded the n-Stream app (3.2) to my iPad. It states that there is a volume control on the app to control the ND5 XS.  I don't see it? Do I need to go back to Specsavers? The picture show's it at the top left of the screen?

It controls a naim preamp volume when connected and enabled from streamer. Doesn't work with my older 282; naim say it might have to have a fix to work

good luck

I have a ND5 XS connected to a (ca. 2008) 282, and the N-Stream volume control works just fine.

All I had to do was use a 3.5mm -> RCA mono cable to connect Remote Out on the ND5 XS to the RC5 in on the 282 and set it up in the system automation menu on the ND5 XS. Naim has a System Automation manual with instructions. The ND5 (Uniti) remote also controls volume as well as changing selection between the phono and ND5 inputs on the 282.

It also worked with my older (ca. 2003) 202 when I had that.

Well I used a mono rca with 3.5mm adapter but it doesn't work. I wish naim would stick one in the box as it must cost all of a couple of quid....

I used a 3.5mm male stereo to male RCA stereo using only one of the RCA plugs into a 202 from an NDX and it seems to work just fine.

Ah, I forgot to mention that my ND5 XS is connected directly to my Supernait, via the analogue out on the ND5 XS to the analogue in on the Supernait. However, there is no volume control showing on my iPad app.

Just as a point of interest, I am presently feeding the ND5 XS with music stored on my Qnap NAS, using the Twonky Server, but because it's in WAV, it won't read all the metadata. I can't convert all the files to FLAC, because I am a Mac user. dbpoweramp, and all the others don't work with Macs. Do people use a server on their Mac/PC, such as Asset?

David, download and use XLD to do the conversion on a Mac.  You can find it online easily -- just Google it up

From recollection there is a setting on the ND5XS to tell it if you have the cable connected to your pre-amp to control the volume.  The SuperNait has an RC5 input which I think should work.

Why not convert your files to AIFF or Apple Lossless (the ND5XS supports both I think).  These both support metadata better than WAV.

Did you enable it in the System Automation menu on your ND5 XS?

Connecting the cable is not enough.

I have the ND5XS, the iPad App volume control works with my 202 circa 2002 but not with my 282 circa 2003

I contacted Naim and was told I may need a new display board fitted

Thanks Eloise...

Funnily enough, I re-ripped an album (Abbey Road) to Apple lossless, the metadata was much better, but not a good as FLAC. I'm waiting for the updated 1.7 software on the Unitiserve, so that I can convert all the files. However, when I spoke to Steve Hopkins today, he informed me that a bug had been found, so a delay of about 2-3 weeks was expected.

Regards

Did you have this board fitted or like me leave it until a more appropriate time. Whenever that might be....

Not yet, might not bother as I'll likely upgrade to a 252 or similar end of this year.   It's not that big a deal just a nice touch to be able to change it from the app.   My 202 is older so it seems a bit strange that it works OK but the 282 doesn't.

Funnily enough I had the same issue with my 282:  the n-Stream app refused to change volume or input, despite the fact that it worked with the inputs on my DAC.  Local dealer tested their in store model and it too failed to play nice.  Result:  mine went back to Naim and was fettled (known issue apparently), back in 3 days and now works perfectly!
