Well done Andy once again

A couple of years ago he'd have lost that match but today had the mental strength to come back from the brink against a very powerful talented opponent.

All the best on Friday.

Yesss, but.

I watched the first two sets. He looked awkward, sloppy and unfocussed. Congrats for pulling it together but I don't think Djokovic is getting a sweat on just yet.

We saw the worst and something nearer the best of him Bruce. That was my point. After two sets he was dead and buried and that would have been the end a couple of years ago but he got himself together to win sets 3 and 4 quite comfortably. Final set was hot and cold but he won comfortably in the end. I think it was a superb result against a powerful opponent whose current ranking is ridiculous.

I don't think Djokovic is trembling by any means but I think he'd rather have played Verdasco than Murray.

Still a few games to play yet.

Is it sexist to say how nice it was to watch a high quality Ladies semi between two players who actually looked like women?

Currently at 91% British on the Andymurrayometer.

Although losing two sets dropped him from the 93% he was on.

Will he get to 100% (i.e. win?) The US Open/Olympics got him to 99%.

I did not see the ladies semis but I'm aware that if you have long legs and (perhaps most importantly) smile a bit you can pretty well be sure of popular support.

I think Bartholi is resigned to being unpopular in the final.

I more or less stop watching any ladies match if they start screaming/grunting rather than wether they are easy on the eye!

Had to sit for an hour in a hospital waiting room yesterday. On their TV they were showing a match between 2 Juniors, they both looked about 14 ish but bloody hell could they  both hit a ball hard. A most enjoyable game to watch.

That Djokovic vs Del Potro match was something else,  hard to imagine Andy rising to that level,  but you never know, here's hoping he will  -  & more.

But to the point of my post; I am pondering the Wimbledon & other major tennis tournament prize money. Exciting as ladies tennis play is  (maybe not so with the French v Belgium semi final)  I am concerned with both getting the same prize money, why do the ladies get paid the same for a maximum 3 set game whereas the men have 5 sets for the same money.  ??

It seems just a little too much for a little too less.

They get the same because they moaned(literally) and whinged until they persuaded the Grand Slams to pay them the same BJK is claiming responsibility. Must be great to get the same pay for maximum of 3/5 of the work.

Marvellous day's tennis. The first match in particular was one of the best I've seen for years.

Once Andy had got to grips with Janowicz's game and whining and the puzzling decision to close the roof while it was still daylight there was only one result possible.

Can't wait for the final.

The men's game is obviously of a far higher standard and I reckon they're a far bigger draw.

I'd love to see a truly open tournament including men and women. Over 3 or 5 it would be interesting to see how many women got to the last 16 or even 32.

I don't imagine the women would be too keen on that though.

They should get paid in proportion to the true value they create. That is, nothing at all. The same with the men. Professional sport is pointless, morally bankrupt, corrupt and rotten to the core. Play sport, don't watch it. And certainly don't pay people to play it

Saw the last set and half of Andy Murray last night. Rather enjoyed the brooding agression of his opponent (although I did not think he'd actually win). Nice to have a bit od 'spice' instead of the mutual love-in of some games. WEould have loved to have watched Djokovic's game though.

As for playing sport, I'm off as per every summer weekend to play Cricket now. Just for a change in the sunshine!

At least he hasn't told you that you live in a hell-hole. Not yet anyway!

Looking forward to the final. I suspect it is Novak's to lose rather than Andy's to win, but he does seemed to have tamed his losing attitude, and it promises to be an excellent match.

Which I would be happy to pay to see (although not those prices). Top sportspeople might well get paid too much (market forces rather than their own fault), but the world would be a less entertaining place if they didn't get paid at all.

I'm sort-of actually with you on that one. My main beef is actually with the funding mechanism. The money flowing into professional sports should come from ticket sales and broadcasting rights alone. There should be no sponsorship. Let the people who want to watch pay for the priviledge, but don't make me pay for it when I buy the product of a sponsoring company or deduct it from my dividend payments. Advertising generally is a deadweight loss on our society. It costs a fortune, creates no net value and just generally annoys (although some of it admittedly amusing).

Don't buy the product, it's simple.

Posted on: 06 July 2013 by JamieWednesday

Ah but that's the power of advertising, which must work right? People just can't resist associating themselves with winners. I remember when Becker started wearing Mercedes logos and 27 billion Chinese went out and bought a new car. It's like when Marlboro used to sponsor McLaren, I couldn't stop myself from driving (like a crazed loony) down to the corner shop to buy 800 fags every time a Grand Prix was on...And I don't even smoke. Mind you Ferrari sell lots of hats at the races.

I try not to when I can, but in many areas, all major manufacturers spend big on marketing. You really limit your choice if you avoid the companies that are in the negative-sum marketing wars.

What a strange place you live wic. Is there anything you like that doesn't result in 90% of the rest of us losing out?

I could ask you the same question.

Jeez you're a miserable bugger. So what actually makes you happy apart from the ignorant plebs being put somewhere out of your way?

For WIC of course.
