Advice for a digital coaxial cable.

Posted by: Wotan on 20 January 2011

Currently, muy digital system: Naim DAC/hiface EVO/TeraDak power supply/Mac mini 2010/Chord Optichord optical cable.

I'm thinking of upgrading the digital cable. Maybe BNC-BNC. I wonder what is your opinion. Is it worth it compared to optical cable? What cable do you recommend me? Thanks.

Wotan,

I recently tried out a glass-fibre optical lead in place of the previous plastic optical between transport and Naim DAC/XPS.  It was obviously better resolved, but not by as much as I thought.  Reverting to a DC1 coaxial restored more depth, and greater dynamic contrast.  Further casual listening, switching between the glass optical and the DC1 coaxial connection showed that the latter just made everything a bit more involving and engrossing.  Interesting experiment...

p.s. The DC1 in question was an RCA version.

Just some info. The teradak has input AC filtering that could adversly effect the mains for other components. If you'd like to check, pull the computer and ps from the mains and listen to your TT. Then add them back for a compare.

Thanks Richard.

With my EVO I can use RCA or BNC. What's better?

While on the DC1 Naim paid a great deal of attention to the RCA connector to ensure correct impedence, the BNC effectively guarantees this, so given the choice, go for BNC.

Hi Wotan, I also use and prefer BNC with the Naim DAC but I also obtained great results with cheap optical cables.
What do you think of the EVO powered with the TeraDAk? Have you used batteries?
Posted on: 20 January 2011 by Wotan
js, I don't understand. The TeraDak power only the EVO, how could adversly effect the mains of others components?

oddly enough, I use both!  RCA-BNC DC1.

Wotan, I believe the Teradak PSU uses an EMI filter.  These can adversely affect the sound performance of anything else plugged into the same mains, Naim in particular.  Having said that, so can an SMPS, so probably Hobsons choice here.

Hi.
I use Digital coax (RCA) by Atlas (Opus, 75 cm) and Wireworld (Starlight 6, 2m) to connect BluRay and Sat-Receiver to the DAC, for TV I use the Atlas Fibre Optic. IMO the coax is definitely better than optical. But I canĀ“t find a difference between Wireworld and Atlas coax...

Optimum length : 1.5 meter. Optimum connectors : BNC-BNC. Mine is made by BIS-Audio and I prefer it to the DC1.

Hi,

When I bought my HDX I tried the Chord Indigo, Chord Signature, Optichord, naim dc1 & atlas Opus.

I ended up choosing the Indigo, my order of preference was Indigo, opus, Optichord, signature and then Naim. Apart from opticord all were Bnc. I really find it bizarre that a digital cable can make a difference, but I felt the Altas and Chord Indigo were way above the rest with more clarity and a tighter sound.

I did some blind demos as well. My wife was also able to pick the differences.

I would recommend demoing some of them and make up your own mind.

Rich,

Out of curiosity, were they all the same length ?

Hi Jan,

The Chords were 1m, as I remember the Atlas was the same, but I believe Naim was longer.

js,

Finally, I have done the test that you told me. And... Oops! I have to admit that you were right. The sound of my TT is quite poor with the TeraDak in the mains.

So I have to thank you for your advice (Richard also). I am totally convinced and I'll return the TeraDak. Now, besides looking for a digital cable, I have to find a suitable power supply for the EVO.

Goldfinch, I think I have answered your question.

rhr,

Your comments are very interesants to me. Only a question, Is it worth investing my money on a Indigo (or DC1) having a Optichord? The difference is very noticeable, or not?

Unfortunately, I have no possibility to test before.

Hi Wotan,

I thought in my system and my room, I could hear a difference. The Atlas  was actually very close to the Chord Indigo and as I remember half the price.

Over the weekend I'll stick my Optichord on my HDX & DAC and report back back, but I would recommend trying before you buy as it's your money, your system and your room. It doesn't matter what other people think. But IMO the digital cables do have an effect.

Hi,

Had a quick try of an Optichord vs Indigo. And the Optichord wasn't bad. It's very musical, good timing and good bass. But you could definitely spot the difference between the 2. Switching to the Indigo was like removing a piece of cloth from over the speakers. Everything was tighter, the treble was sweeter, everything was clearer.

As I remember when trialling other cables this was my impression of the Indigo against the others. It seemed to have higher resolution.

However, if you compare the prices, the Indigo is definitely not 10 times better than the Optichord.

Thanks for the information Rich.

For now, my decision is between Naim DC1 and Chord Indigo. I would like to hear more comparisons between these two.

Has anyone tried a coaxial digital cable AudioQuest (VDM-1 or VDM-3) with the Naim DAC?

I bought a Mark Grant 75ohm digital cable. After comparing to Chord Signature I couldn't hear a difference. I did however hear a difference between Signature and cheaper Chord digital cables.

Mark offers sale or return so no risk giving one a go.

Any experience with it?

I love what the Indigo does as well, can't see it being bettered at all. A bit costly but worth it when you look at how much a power lead can cost!
