How do you search the topic database?

I've been looking at the new forum and think it has a lot of potential as it is fine tuned and all of the users get use to it. The one thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to search the database for previous threads/topics. I've tried the refine list field and that doesn't work for me. I don't see any other obvious choice. Can anybody help? Many thanks.
