Oppo BD players..are users happy?

Posted by: Geoff P on 27 January 2011

Folks

I recall lots of threads ( can't find the damn things) extolling Oppo DVD/Blu-ray players. Can a few users remind me how happy they are. I want to drive my Infocus HD projector with it so what are projected pictures like on Oppo's

I am tempted to buy the new OPPO -BDP-93EU particularly for its universal disc play capability. Anybody got there hands on one of these yet?

Any input appreciated.

regards

Can someone who has already seen a new Oppo 9x series say something about the noise?
I see on the pics that the 95 has a fan on the back, what I generally dislike... But not the 93!

The new Philips BDP 9600 had a very good test (reference status) in german AudioVision magazine 12/2010. They wrote that it has no fan and even the drive is very quiet.

Regarding the BDP93 I sent a message to support via oppo bluray uk as to whether I can connect the player direct to power amplifiers via the multi analogue outs and effectively control the volume.

The Oppo European Support Engineer sent me a reply and said that this was possible. There is an analogue only volume range of 0 - 100db in 20 steps of 5db.

I then asked if there was any audio delay control. Unfortunately there is no audio delay control which means I cannot achieve what I want - player direct to XS + nap175. Back to the drawing board.

Again apologies for veering off thread title

Audio
-------

My dealer popped round this afternoon, and we had some fun tinkering - thx Mike.

As a part of this we used 'Dark Night' to do a three way comparison:

1. DTS HD Oppo 5.1 -> AV2 AVI, decoding by the Oppo;
2. Dolby Dig -> AV2;
3. DTS HD via Coax -> AV2.

In the case of three the Oppo was transcoding the HiDef DTS to a bitstream output the AV2 could decode.

...and the winner was? (3). The AV2 had more impact and presence. The Oppo into the AVI did seam to be revealing some other detail, or the mix had a different balance. It might be that on certain films I might prefer (1).

Hi Geoff -

I bought a BDP83 a couple of years ago (shortly after it was announced) for my home theater setup.  Have been really impressed with its picture quality, reliability and ease of updating via the web .  The latter is important for Blu Ray, where the different studio's use of Java makes playability a bit of a moving target.  Every once in a while, a new release will require a player update first.   But Oppo has been very quick to deliver these updates, and this is just one example of what seems to be a very good customer service organization.  Am currently using a single HDMI connection into a Denon 3808CI receiver to drive a 5.1 setup, and letting the Oppo do all of the video processing.

Also, it was easy and inexpensive to modify the BDP83 for region-free (though it can never ship that way because of the restrictions imposed by the Blu Ray license).  IIRC, I ordered my kit from a guy in Denmark.

Bought a second BDP83 for my Naim setup, and then had Oppo upgrade it to a BDP83SE when that model came out.  My thinking was I would be use the higher quality stereo analog outputs and, for a while, I did.  Now I am back to using a single HDMI connection into an Octava spiltter, and from there, a Toslink connection into the Naim DAC.  Have not heard any reduction in sound quality playing SACDs this way (with the Oppo converting to 24/192 PCM).

All told, I think the BDP83 is an impressive, high VFM product from a very likable company.   The BDP93 looks like a very nice upgrade (2 HDMI outputs, no fan, etc.), and the BDP95 appears to be the replacement for the BDP83SE.   Last I looked, there was still a very active AVS forum community discussing all things Oppo, and there is also a good FAQ that you can find by doing a web search for "Unofficial Oppo BDP-93 Frequently Asked Questions".

It is very nice being able to shop for audio and video bargains, with no concerns about the disc's format!

Good luck!

Just to make things clear ...

I use my DVD5 with nDAC for music.  DVD-A and SACD are not great priorities for me, and have other than getting a couple of discs to try it out I have left those formats alone.  Of course the DVD5 doesn't do SACD, but I have never bothered to compare the analogue outputs of the DVD5 and Oppo on DVD-A.  Life is just too short.

I use my Oppo83SE for DVD with coaxial digital into AV2
For BluRay with High Def Audio I use the Oppo's analogue outputs into the AV2.  Unlike some others here, I and TonyM (from previous postings on the forums) prefer this to taking the coaxial digital output into the AV2.

Hi Dungassin,

I use the coax out into my nDAC, for playing back music DVDs, with PCM soundtracks; which is what I mainly collect.
I use the optical out into my AV2.

I rip CDs and steam these to a laptop > HiFace > nDAC.

I did hope that I could use the Oppo to replace the laptop. It does act as a DLNA client, and even passes on the HiDef tracks ....but it is not as good as the Laptop/HiFace.

I'm probably NOT going to keep the DVD5, but it is still a great box.

Oppo HiDef spdif vs AV2 decode:
I can fully understand why you might prefer this. For me, on the two BluRays I've done the comparisons, I prefered the AV2 decode, it just had more weight. BUT, the Oppo decode did have a different feed, and perhaps a bit more detail.

Hi to all here being a BDP93 recent owner myself can i connect the machine to the AV2  using the MCH outputs on the BDP93? if so how or no option other than a customised cable many thanks.

Regards.

vj,

Yes, but I think you'll have to use the AV2 versatile input (VIP), AND have the cables made up, as you thought.

Worthwhile? Certainly worth a listen.

Did you consider the 95?

Ah, I see they've finally instituted correct quoting!

What I do find is that I have to crank up the volume by a fair amount when using the Oppo into the AV2 multi inputs to obtain a similar sound level to the Coax Dig input (again from the Oppo).  When I do this the superiority of the HD output from the Oppo83SE decoder is (to me) obvious.  Perhaps what you are hearing is due to the Coax being subjectively louder?  I'm well aware of this problem which can be a real nuisance when auditioning equipment.

@Dungassin:

Are you using custom made cable to the VIPS input(s), if so where can you suggest i could obtain these many thanks.

@Mr Underhill:

I fully intend to buy a BDP95 obviously after a very long demo and again reading owners views/reviews now its price has been announced @ £899.00 deliveries are expected april/may they say.

But it will have pretty darn good to fully replace my DVD5 in CD 2 channel stereo.

I am in full agreement with you here, I spent a long time matching the output volume of the AV2 via coax and analogue  from my 83SEand even longer getting the bass settings right. when I finally did it was very apparent that the HD output form the 83SE was superior to the AV2 decoding the high bitrate DTS signal.

I got 2 Chord Crimson ones.  They are the 4 PHONO>DIN versions, which I got just in case I had probelms with sorting out the channels.  Means I've got a couple of unused PHONO plugs, but they work fine.

@Dungassin:

Great thanks for that much appreciated, i also have found flashback cables do the same so i'll give both a call.

Best Regards.

A update i've had dave at Flashback make up 2 pairs of 4 X phono/RCA > 5 pin DIN cables and have now connected these, everything seemed fine but the sub out does not seem to work?.

Anyone have an idea what the problem maybe? reading the above posts regarding swapping the V1/V2  leads around could this resolve the issue thankyou.
Posted on: 28 February 2011 by Mr Underhill
v_j_r,

Somewhere higher up I noted that I was having this issue. Oppo have a -10db output on the sub on the 83, the solution for me was simply to go into the setup and boost the sub output.

Hope this helps.

Going back to basics :

Use the speaker setup routine on the Oppo.  Check that the sound is coming from the correct speakers.  If not, try swapping the connections at the Oppo end until it all works.

P.S.  I assume that you're system (Oppo and AV amp) does KNOW it's got a subwoofer?

Hi many thanks for all the advice etc and apologise for the late reply due some time out again thanks to all and it will be interesting to see any feedback if at all from those who intend to purchase the BD95!.

I would really have a look at the Cambridge 751BD which is an Oppo BDP-95 with theses differences :

"In terms of our implementation what I can say is that 751BD features both a dedicated stereo analogue output, and 7.1 analogue multi channel output.

These are created by 5 separate Wolfson WM8740 DACS, to ensure that every audio channel is decoded in the highest possible quality.

In addition, all analog audio outputs (both Stereo and 7.1) are up-sampled to 24-bit/192kHz by Anagram Technologies Q5 up-sampling running in a 32bit SHARC DSP.

This technology is proprietary to Cambridge Audio and is derived from the multiple award winning Azur 840C CD player. "

What about the new Cambridge Audio BD 751 which is supposed to be based upon the OPPO 95, but different. Price about £800.00

Cambridge is not a exactly an Oppo 95 base.

They both use the same development kit from Mediatek ...

Here is what Cambridge explains :

"We had many similar queries about the 650BD and similarities to the Oppo models last year.

As with our previous models the forthcoming Cambridge Audio 751BD is based on a Mediatek chipset.

In this case its the very latest MTK8530 solution which supports dual HDMI, 3D TV output and other new features.

Cambridge Audio of course have had a long relationship with Mediatek having based all of our previous 650BD BluRay, DVD89, DVD99, DV30, 540D V1 and V2 DVD players on various different Mediatek platforms.

As you would expect we are not the only brand to be using Mediatek development kits and application software, Oppo continue to use them, as are various new big league adoptors.

Generally brands like us prefer to use platforms that are also used by other customers as it means that when/if issues with discs and playback formats are found everyone is feeding back into a common knowledge pool (Mediatek in this case) and all brands benefit in terms of the reliability and robustness of the chipset and core software.

In terms of what Mediatek offer each customer they give us all schematics, software and PCB layouts for example versions of their solution.

The processor code includes an OSD generator and tools for defining setup menus and the like.

In fact Mediatek supply application code that gives an excellent framework for this.

This does mean that any machine based on the chipset is very likely to have a similar look and feel to the On-Screen Display.

For the hardware, each manufacturer then edits or regenerates these to greater or lesser extent to add their own flavour of sockets, DACs, power supplies etc. as they see fit.

Our model is thus our own and in this case we designed from the ground up a new audio stage with both a dedicated stereo analogue output, and  7.1 analogue multi channel output

In addition, all analogue audio outputs (both Stereo and 7.1) are processed for jitter suppression and up-sampling to 24-bit/192kHz by Anagram Technologies Q5 up-sampling running in our 32bit SHARC DSP.

We use various components (particular brands and types of capacitors for instance) and circuits developed and chosen by us from many hours of measurement and listening tests.

This design and its attendant technology is completely proprietary to Cambridge Audio is derived from developments first used in the multiple award winning Azur 840C CD player and DacMagic.

We also offer a choice of digital filters – linear phase/minimum phase/steep filter, as featured in the DacMagic.

Various other tweaks have also been done and the transport is indeed a new very high quality item, its one of various ones MTK support/recommend and being freely available on the market others may well choose to use it.

We don’t actually have an inside track on what the other Mediatek licensees may choose to use.

In short Cambridge Audio and Oppo or others actually have no relation.  We are merely connected by our relationship with the chipset supplier, Mediatek and the fact that the core of our designs stem from there.

It’s a bit like saying all PCs are the same because they use Intel processors and run windows, that is the root but clearly the products deviate greatly from that starting point.

We seek to maximise the performance of our units for the type of customer we cater for, and in particular we are passionate about the musical ability of our products so a lot of ‘special sauce’ goes into that."

I am fairly new to Oppo and would like to know how come they are so revered here? Is it because of the analogue outputs inconjunction with the AV2 to provide the HD codecs or the SACD/DVD Audio ability?

Or are they the most similar to Naim sound wise? I appreciate that they also have great customer service etc. But they always seem to be the favoured choice over the Arcams and Cambridge Audios  who also market musicially optimised Bluray machines (or soon will be).

Kind regards

Well, I bought my Oppo 83SE because :

1. DVD picture quality as good as DVD5 (although I have kept my DVD5 as a transport for the nDAC)

2. Good onboard decoder for HD bluray soundtracks (via my AV2)

3. Multiregion for DVD and bluray

I use the Oppo's decoder for bluray HD audio only.  Other codecs I send to my AV2 via SPDIF.

As regards DVD-A, well my DVD5 is better at that than the Oppo.

SACD - a little underwhelmed by its "advantages".  To be honest, with the hybrid SACD discs I own, I prefer to play them as CDs using DVD5/nDAC than use the Oppo.

I did consider the top-of-range Pioneer bluray player, but for same facilites was a LOT more expensive.

Posted on: 02 May 2011 by Mr Underhill

I pretty much echo Dungassin.

I needed to pay BluRay for the new TV, and I needed the onboard decoding to feed to my AV2.

I still use the DVD5 for music DVDs.

I ripped my DVD-As and stream them - MUCH better than either DVD-A or SACD in my system.

I like the fact that Oppo actively support their machines, and offer bios updates.

I think the offer excellent VFM.
