Which is best ripping format?
Posted by: Richard Lord on 28 January 2011
Naim tell me the UnityQute does not support Apple Lossless. So which is the best ripping format? I have Apple Lossless, MP3, AAC and AIFF offered by the iTunes software on my iMac. Leaving aside both Apple Lossless and MP3, Apple because it is not supported and MP3 for obvious reasons, which is the better of the remaining two?

Yes the music data in them is absolutely the same.
This can be verified using foobar and dBpoweramp to name but two tools.
Download dBpoweramp and foobar yourself, free, and rip a cd yourself, and prove it to yourself.
Doesn't take more than 15 minutes.

I have a side question. I have some m4a (Apple lossless) files which I ripped some time ago for use with my DAC. Now that I got a Uniti, and having tried both my NAS's transcoder and having Uniti read the same FLAC files by turning off transcoding, I think I hear some difference in SQ (hopefully not psycho acoustic effect......), I decided that I should no longer let the NAS to transcode those m4a for me.
So my question is, is converting them to FLAC with XLD going to be bit perfect? Or should I go through the trouble of ripping again?
You know, theoretically converting should be bit perfect, but you never know what crazy things those programmers can do...... I just need to look at all those tweaky excel worksheet and macros myself to know that people take all kind of crazy shotcuts if they never designed it to with file conversion in mind......

Reference:
or the equally inoffensive "Is the nDac any good?"
That is an easy one..... Yes.

Careful .... only yes .... do I detect a lack of commitment to the nDac
Surely your statement should have read .... "All praise to the nDac!"

David, the European Broadcast Union has adopted FLAC 'industrially' for distribution via satellite transponders. http://www.ebu.ch/en/radio/ops_rdo/faq/index.php

From the EBU website:
"All concerts on the Euroradio satellite channels, Ravel & Verdi, are recorded by the EBU Geneva Musipop PC as WAV files."
FLAC is used for FTP purposes, but there is no expectation that the file will be played out in that format (in fact, there is a notion that it may in fact be transcoded prior to playback, if space is at a premium on the playout device).
The primordial file is itself WAV (or BWF), just as you'd see on a professional recorder.

The first part of the upgrade process arrives tomorrow - the PMC OB1i speakers. Paul Green Hi Fi in Bath is bringing them across the water. The BIG upgrade should be next week, when the Qute and the 250 arrive.
For reasons that I will not disclose here (but understood by Naim), they are being supplied by UHES. Norman and Ian are presently on holiday, so I will be motoring up to pick them up, On their return from holiday, they will be visiting me and doing a proper install. I believe they want to try alternative cables.
J.N. will be in attendance to keep a watching brief. Between them all, I am sure it should all go well.
Even with my present kit, I was so much enjoying my system today, I became reflective that the system is really secondary. It is the emotion that music creates, irrespective of however humble the playback system is.
So tomorrow my little Nait 5i will have to cope with those big nasty PMC brutes. I hope it can handle them.
I will wait for the full install before making my final decision regarding choice of encoder. It will then be far more revealing and thus an easier choice to make, I hope.
Oh yes,
Mireille Mathieu because of her voice, one to die for.
