Little Feat ?
Posted by: james n on 29 January 2011
I caught Little Feat playing 'Rock and Roll Doctor' on BBC4's Guitar heroes and absolutely loved it. Any recommendations on where to start in the back catalogue (in the Lowell George years) ?
Cheers

I strongly recommend their live masterpiece, Waiting For Columbus.

Listening to “Sailing Shoes” is a must. Showcases Lowell George’s writing and playing talents more than any other Little Feat album.
The musical style of subsequent albums changes due to the introduction of Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton. Of these I’d recommend “The Last Record Album” and Feats Don’t fail me now”
As Fred said Waiting for columbis is an excellent album. They always were and still are awesome live.

if you're experimenting just get the best of - less than a fiver almost everywhere

'The Last Record Album' and 'Waiting For Columbus' are both great albums. If you get 'Waiting For Columbus' make sure you get the remastered version as it has several previously unreleased tracks

another vote for 'Feats don't fail me now'. It's one of my albums recommended to friends with a 6-pack guarantee - 'if you don't like it, I'll buy you a six-pack' (no, not a bunch of 135's)...
And I love 'Time loves a hero'. 'Old folks boogie' and 'rocket in my pocket' are hillarious.
I don't think they've done a bad album. I've most of them.
Also worth hunting out is 'thanks, I'll eat it here' by Lowell George. Great fun.
I also rate 'Let it roll', although it lacks Geroge, it's still an album with a great feel. I saw the Feat in 2001 in London at 'The Ocean' in Hackney, a great gig, and they were certainly an excellent live act after all these years.

Sorry about that. Still getting used to the new forum I guess.
All the other ones mentioned above are great, but also try some of Lowell George's solo stuff as well, "Thanks, I'll Eat it Here" is worth checking out.
Robert Palmer covered some of his stuff in the early days, so try Sneakin Sally and Double Fun. Fantastic listening!

Another vote for "Waiting For Columbus" - great songs and recording. I've got the original vinyl & recently bought the MoFi version on CD which is also excellent.
The original "Little Feat" album's pretty good too IMO.

Although not a Little Feat album, I would urge you to check out Lowell George's solo album 'Thanks I'll Eat It Here'.
It contains great versions of 'What Do You Want The Girl To Do', 'I Can't Stand The Rain' and 'Easy Money'.
I would give it an unreserved recommendation and find it equally enjoyable as the best of the Little Feat albums

I first heard LF in 75 at college in Colorado from my roommate, Feats Don't Fail Me Now. I was hooked. Moving back to CA I bought a couple more of the Michael McDonald inspired, he was all over the radio at the time tho I don't think his songs are great. I gave the record collection away moving around and rebought a number of the albums. Funny I've never seen them live except in a video on Netflix of their annual show in the caribbean.

I would also recommend Hoy, Hoy! which has a brilliant version of Red Streamliner on it.

A reissue of Waiting for Columbus on vinyl is on sale in the UK for a knee-trembling £45-50. Barmy or barnstorming?

Some great albums mentioned above, but i can't believe Dixie Chicken hasn't been reccomended yet,it is a fantastic album, one of my favourites of the Lowell George era.
I love all their albums with Lowell George, except the first one.
As it was mentioned, early Robert Palmer is also worth a listen, the album Pressure Drop also has Little feat playing on it.
A couple of dvd's worth checking out are,Little Feat-Skin it Back (with Lowell George )and High wire act live in St Louis 2003. (obviously without Lowell George)

The "Electrif Lycanthrope" bootleg is available (legally) on glorious FLAC quality at the link below. Apparently uploaded by the sound engineer of the original sessions.

The version of "The Fan"(at the time not recorded) shows LF to be the one of the tightest jamming bands of their time. A great record of a great band at the peak of their improvisational heights - and totally legit!

They actually played on his first album Sneakin Sally and he sang with them on a small US tour where they supposedly asked him to join the band to which he refused.
