Mornington Crescent - 2011 New Forum Version
Posted by: JamieL_v2 on 01 February 2011
Well there has been a lot of talk about if the new look forum works. Well what better way to test it properly than with a good, or possibly mediocre, but hopefully not bad, game of 'Mornington Crescent'?
In the spirit of newness, new, rebuilt, or revamped stations score double, reversing is not allowed, and new lines (post 1980) can only be followed by a diagonal.
Other than that I would suggest playing Brunell's Great Western variant. Tunnelling is only allowed to the West, crossing water must be done only on double lines, any 'green' stations cause the following player to skip a go. Suburban routes are to be played below the line.
Obviously the Great Western variant allows to news rules to instigated by senior players as the game progresses provided there is consensus.
If all that sounds good, I will male a bold, although slightly risky start.
New Malden.

Not to be a stickler early on but is that a diagonal tjb?

No, if we are playing the Regent card then this move is acceptable, sneaky but acceptable.

I realise that Brunell's Great Western variant doesn't prevent this type of play but I'm shocked at the preponderance of moves south of the river. What's going on? Potters Bar.

Bandits......................................and proud!

Is Potters Bar on a Tube Line?

Damn! No, Potters Bar isn't on the tube, I meant High Barnet. After such an appalling error I feel I must resign gracefully. I do hope that the flow of this extremely tense match has not been interrupted.

I never thought that strict adherence to current tube stations was a pre-requisite. Potters Bar although not possibly not a valid station, is however a valid move.
Where is Adam Meredith when you need some expert moderation? (One of the best players I have ever encountered, I have never dared ask his handicap).
In the same spirit, I play a classic old move:

I cannot help here as I have recently, and unwisely, been playing the De Selby Codex with experimental gamers on the internet.
The next two moves, if I interpret correctly, would now be - Haussmann Saint-Lazare and then (incomprehensibly) - "Is it about a bicycle?" to which there is no response but insanity.

And so - the madness begins.
It might be nice to indicate
whom we are quoting/referencing.

Adam, beware! Under De Selby a bicycle is not a thing to be trusted. If you follow this path you'll quickly become involved with mangles and, more than likely, the policeman.
Tread carefully.

I know this to be correct.
Pinioned beneath the De Selby impasse, I find myself reaching for the discredited 'Kraus Variation'. Is this desperation and/or the promised incipient madness?
As I shall be engaged for a while - I would suggest you continue to play with yourselves.

well thank you Adam. I am sure we will all mis-interpret your last instruction!
Anyway... back to the game....
