New Naim forum

A Message to Naim:
Well, guys, this "new" forum has only been online for a couple of weeks but I'm getting really tired of the Draconian moderation and the inflexible format. I've been a member for several years; I have received, and hope I have given, helpful advice. But the deletion and locking of posts, the inability to quote text, etc, has got to the point that I'm seriously considering using only the Pink Fish and Linn fora. While I realize you must have put a lot of effort into this new forum, it can best, and most charitably, be described as a "work in progress" at the present time and is going to require significant updating to approach the usability of the old forum. Please don't add insult to injury by living by the letter of the law instead of the spirit of the law when moderating posts!
If the forum is to be a useful customer resource (remember, the company exists because of its customers, not the other way around!), lighten up and apply some flexibility and judgement to your moderation. Hopefully you will have the strength of character and customer commitment not to delete this post.

Hi there sktn77a,
I work for Social Strata, the company that gave you your "old" forums as well as the new. I'm sure it's been an adjustment, and we appreciate your input. Even the old forums, "Eve", was a work in progress for all the years it's been running. That's the nature of software, I'm afraid. I'm sure you'll be happy to learn that an even more robust quoting system (than you were used to with Eve) is being added in the immediate future; also, the search function as well, shortly thereafter. If you can hang in there a little longer, you'll find that it'll be worth the wait.
Naim is not the only community that has moved over to Hoop.la and is adjusting from our old Eve platform; while it appears most other communities have settled in already and gotten the hang of things, it's your valuable input that inspires us to be the best we can. We have been passively monitoring the chatter on this site, and of course, we consider everything as a possibility. If there is a genuine bug/error, of course, tell us at help.socialstrata.com.
Thanks again, and feel free to give us your input at the site above. Cheers!

Does the first post of every thread always have shorter text lines than the second one?
Posted on: 02 February 2011 by sbwallace6
I'll check into that; thanks!

I hope it's not a NAIM "shortly" ?

Keith, thanks for your post. Your points regarding the forum are well taken and I'm glad that SW replied with some comment straight from the source. Naim have moved the forum to a new house, one that will allow it to develop further in the future. However, like most new houses, not everything is working as well as it should - the roof leaks a bit, the hot water isn't working properly, the doors stick and there are still builders finishing off areas. But they're working hard to make it all work and, as SW comments, is there any software that isn't a "work in progress"? Anyway, we're all trying to get along with it as it stands and work towards making it all function as it should. I'm sure you've read through the Feedback thread running as a sticky at the top of the forum, a place for members to air their views on the change, and a useful resource for any issue reporting. So hang in there, I'm sure things will improve markedly over the following weeks.
One point you mention regarding what you see as draconian moderation. The only time a thread or post is deleted is if it is threatening, abusive, obscene, potentially libellous or falls foul of the Naim forum rules. Discussion of dangerous practice, or modification of Naim equipment (including and discussion of 3rd party PSUs, which constitute modification), and mention of a company that I cannot name, will also result in moderation or deletion. Apart from that, you are free to discuss whatever you like. By coming to the Naim forum and posting here you agree to abide by the rules of the house. Whether you see this as draconian or not, the rules are there for a good reason and are not up for debate. If the rules are unacceptable to any member then they are free to leave and frequent whichever hifi forum takes their fancy. The door is always open for them here, so long as they abide by house rules. I think that's about as fair as it can be.
Regarding closed topics, sometimes this is necessary where a discussion has diverged way off the original subject, and/or is in danger of degrading into something personal. Often the original subject has been adequately dealt with, the question answered, and so closing the topic acts as a kind of safety valve, allowing the participants a break. Anything unresolved can then be taken up in a new thread, and tempers that may have once been looking frayed are often restored. Older topics get closed automatically after a period of inactivity. This ensures that there are no instances of gross discontinuity in any discussion.
Moderation is all about making a judgement call. Sometimes the rules ensure that call is black and white. Sometimes it's not so straightforward. Personally I try to moderate with as light a touch as possible. Indeed, I prefer to see a degree of self-moderation among the members to ensure that discussion here is kept on a civilised and friendly footing at all times. Most of the time I think it goes well, but not always, and nobody is perfect...

Surely if the rules 'are not up for debate' then they are indeed Draconian.
Posted on: 03 February 2011 by BigH47
Draconian means harsh, not something NAIM forum rules are, surely?
Posted on: 03 February 2011 by TomK
I don't think anybody ever said this board was a democracy.
Personally I've never really had a problem with moderation. I've had a few posts cut because of what I thought were harmless links but it's Naim's board, Naim's rules and it's no big deal for me.
I think the level moderation is by far the least important of the ongoing issues.

Not really. Draco put to death those who committed even the most minor offences. Personally, I think I'm far more reasonable...

Can the man from Social Strata comment on when they are going to make the text readable? This is the main thing that is keeping me away from the site at present. The text is tiny!

Richard you're maintaining an admirable sense of humour during what must be a stressful period.
I'm very impressed.

I get lost with the amount of feedback posts going on.
After some use I have only a number of suggestions.
1. Loose the Avaters
2. Put who ever posted the thread along with the title. This is put simply a no brainer and I defy anyone to show me a forum other than Hoopla where this does not happen.
3. The front page with the various rooms is cold and uninviting, put a little ditty under each to describe whats within. Break it up a bit.
4. Loose the colours, they really are very 1990s.

"Draco = Put to Death"
"NAIM = Delete Post"
OK, maybe there's a difference of degree there! My point was that there are a lot of "rules" that when taken to extremes are couterproductive. For example, I have no problem deleting posts that tell someone how to electrocute themselves! But I struggle to understand why posts containing links to informative areas are verboten. Yes, I know that links can contain malware or viruses but 99% of other fora that permit them don't seem to have a major problem.
This forum is extremely valuable to the user/owner community. Let's all see if we can do better.

Quoting Richard Dane:
However, like most new houses, not everything is working as well as it should - the roof leaks a bit, the hot water isn't working properly, the doors stick and there are still builders finishing off areas.
End quote.
I can't help thinking you should have waited for the furniture to arrive before moving in.

I tend to lurk a lot now (got fed up with how deep is the snow drivel and the never ending insincere obituries) but I have to say I like the layout and sharpness of this new format.
I like the colour as well.

I see you have been playing in the fishpond. You like the new Forum, you must be getting soft
Good, so do I. clean smart & has the potential to be better than before.
It is work in progress, lots of stuff still in the wish list. But could & should have been done smarter (IMO) launched before ready.
100% agree on my snow is deeper than yours etc
Sorry to say this forum is not the place these days for current the non HiFi topics, how good/bad is David/Ed & the ups & downs of the world etc.. The fishpond is full of it, fun to watch, but no way I am locking horns with some of those dudes, scary to think they might be living round the corner.

a simple question, that has possibly been asked, I'm not here much recently
what was wrong with the old forum?
I really hate this new forum, it's like the death of a pet.

I've put this here too as it's not as cluttered as the main thread.
Just been in direct touch with Social Strata and apparently Naim can fix some of the irritations themselves.
Here's what I got from a very friendly, helpful and concerned lady called Rosemary:
"Good to be talking to someone who knows their stuff. The quote feature and the filter (soon to be search) definitely function much differently from the old platform, but they were there. I agree that both are essential.
The time zone and color/styling are choices that are up to the owner of the forum, so we have no control over that. I'm sure Paul will continue working to make those work well for everyone. The gender question is a wording detail that I can certainly bubble up for consideration. You're right about that.

When i use the iPhone app I see people's phone numbers in their profiles. Surely this isn't right?

Just quote the last 3 digits of my number to "prove" that fact (I don't doubt you for a moment, but we do need the evidence) and I think we must ask Naim to sort the problem PDQ.
Cheers

Yours doesn't show. It's a known problem and I wasn't aware it had already been raised when I posted this.
Adam has acknowledged it has to be fixed.
Your name appears to be Don Don though while I'm Tom Tom. Just further signs of stuff being rushed out without proper testing.
The phone number thing is serious though and needs to be fixed immediately.

You should be aware that it's a long way between me being aware and anyone getting off his arse and fixing it.
I'm just 'normal folk' these days.

Point taken Adam but you'll never be "just normal folk" in my eyes.
I'm sure even just normal folk appreciate the implications re Data Protection etc of displaying stuff like phone numbers on a public message board.
