New Naim forum

A Message to Naim:
Well, guys, this "new" forum has only been online for a couple of weeks but I'm getting really tired of the Draconian moderation and the inflexible format. I've been a member for several years; I have received, and hope I have given, helpful advice. But the deletion and locking of posts, the inability to quote text, etc, has got to the point that I'm seriously considering using only the Pink Fish and Linn fora. While I realize you must have put a lot of effort into this new forum, it can best, and most charitably, be described as a "work in progress" at the present time and is going to require significant updating to approach the usability of the old forum. Please don't add insult to injury by living by the letter of the law instead of the spirit of the law when moderating posts!
If the forum is to be a useful customer resource (remember, the company exists because of its customers, not the other way around!), lighten up and apply some flexibility and judgement to your moderation. Hopefully you will have the strength of character and customer commitment not to delete this post.

I find it quite amazing that such mistake has been made. Another example of an application released when not ready and an obvious lack of testing.

Concerning this major bog-up, with the iPhone, I have managed to disrupt the flow of information tendered in good faith as confidential, by rewriting my profile details so that they represent so much gibberish.
However, I had already decided to leave the Forum after the move to the new format, which without an adequate search engine is effectively useless for me, and thus has ceased to be of any interest.
A valuable lesson has been learned about handing out what is private information even to a formerly trusted company like Naim, but my trust in Naim and their subcontractors is now completely destroyed.
I am sorry for the many good people at Naim who are entirely not involved in commissioning this shambles, but I am sorry to say that the company has destroyed all good will and potential loyalty from me by its actions in selecting a new forum platform that seems completely out of control or consideration of the care of information tendered as private.
If someone has their identity stolen or house burgled, because of, or in part because of this action I hope Naim and HOOP.LA have some very good insurance or deep bank accounts.
I would buy a Naim amplifier at some stage in the future, not because of the integrity and carefulness of the company, but because they do what I want an amp to do.
Otherwise I am finished with the company.

Hi all; we're aware of this issue and will have it fixed ASAP--cheers,
Oh no you haven't. I have to thank fixedwheel who kindly phoned me to let me know - needless to say he only had to look at my profile on the iPhone app to get my phone number. It's pretty appalling.

Along with shutting the security holes, you might want to deal with the fact that your iPhone app can't even show your own profile properly, see the extra formatting codes in the text below.

I'm told the iphone App has been fixed. As a precaution Naim took the forum offline until they were sure that any possible access to private profile data via the app was closed off. It seems OK now via my own iPhone and forum app. Should anyone find anything untoward or find that they can still access other members private profile data, please let me know immediately via the "Report Post" button.

Richard, still have problems displaying text and images in the iPhone app. so not sure what was "fixed". Looks the same to me. Even simple things like the hoop.la name overlaping the "Your profile" description is still there...
Posted on: 08 February 2011 by Richard Dane
Tony, the fix was a specific issue that mean't it was possible for some users to see a bit more profile info of certain other members than they were supposed to. Naim take data protection very seriously and so forum access was restricted until this was fixed.
I downloaded the app today and have been using the app all day and it looks fine, but will try to replicate what you're seeing.

There is still overlap on the bottom navigation bar on the phone app, this is in regards to the last 2 items, they will have to shorten the name on the button or use a symbol. Otherwise, the Forum App is much appreciated, I'm sure there is room for improvement, but overall, it's a good thing.
The Forum itself? Has a ways to go, but there's no going back. With my illness (OCD) I've become more patient with things in general, so the forum I'm getting used to now, hope some of the changes proposed by members are implemented, specifically certain things we liked about the old forum.

I meant shorten the name over the symbol.
Dave (from my iPhone)
ps how do you edit your post from within the iPhone app?
Posted on: 08 February 2011 by Tony Russell
Thanks.
For example when I visit the following thread I cannot see any of the images on my iPhone:
https://forums.naimaudio.com/di...ent/2833539991220541
And the text in the first post is truncated, all I see is Hi Lads:

Thanks Tony, yes I get the same. It's not the only post on that thread that's been curtailed either. I'll run it against the same thread via web browser to see whether there's anything obvious that's causing the problem. I'll notify Hoop La as well.

Dave, good spot! I haven't tried to edit anything yet via iPhone but now I see that it's not (yet?) possible. I'll add it to the wish list.

Still no apology though, I see.

Jon, I'm still catching my breath here! I'm sure an apology will be forthcoming, but in the meantime, I shall apologise on naim's and hoop-la's behalf to all and anyone whose personal profile data may have been made visible to other forum members via the iphone app. As mentioned above, as soon as I was made aware of this I took steps to take the forum offline as quickly as possible until it was confirmed that the issue had been fixed.

Richard posted the above note. Is it now CERTAIN that the security breach is now fixed. (never mind the relativly trivial matters of whether the forum is nice-looking, easy to use, or functional - these can be fixed later). Richard seems to be mildly confident that, because he can't access personal data from his i-phone app, the problem is fixed. I'm inclined to hope it has been. It would be nice to be certain.
Any other security bugs?
Then, quite separately, is there a revised date for Hoopla going live with the 7th Feb upgrade? I thought it was scheduled for 7th, but others think it was w/c 7th Feb.
Cheers
Don

Don, Hoop-La have assured Naim it is fixed. It was a bug and from here it looks like it's now OK.
I've just been informed that there's a forum update coming on the evening of Thursday 10th February. I will post this as a sticky to remind everyone that there will be some downtime of approximately 2 hours. Naim have asked for a list of updates that will be applied so it can be posted for all.

Much appreciated.

Well that's a start, Richard, thanks. All the same, I very much doubt I will feel comfortable about putting my details back into my profile unless Hoop.La come up with an explanation for what happened together with whatever steps they say they have taken to rectify the problem. I would never have expected the idea of trust to be an issue with Naim and remain somewhat surprised and disappointed that it has.Posted on: 08 February 2011 by garyi
Not being funny like, but why would any one put their phone number and address on any forum, bit silly really.

I thought the same. I'm such a cagey mofo, I even post as an ewok.
Never mind though... it probably won't happen again for a few weeks, or whenever it is they update the app.

Name, address, phone number, date of birth...
Why the forum designer did not include a field to input Social Security Number in the profile of members?.

I agree Gary but some people are still naive about how things work in the web world, which makes it even more important that disgraceful cock ups like this don't happen.
