HDX hardware Incarnations
Posted by: sktn77a on 03 February 2011
Can anybody summarize or point me to a link describing the various hardware incarnations of the HDX and the significnace of these hardware revisions? My understanding is that the 2009 2x400GB version was updated to a 2x500gb version in 2010 and that this version was updated to a 1TB version for 2011. I also believe that the PCI audiocard (chip?) was updated along with new RAM for 2011. Was the ITX motherboard changed (I'm guessing the PCI audio is a chip on the motherboard) and were any other hardware changes incorporated?
How about software updates and are these applicable across all hardware versions?
Yes, I did search/refine but no hits.
Thanks,
Keith

Keith, please contact your retailer–he can supply you with this information (and I know why you're asking).

Ah, Dave the wise one, Dave the all-seeing..........
I shall try again, tomorrow (he's old school and not really on the bleeding edge of computer audio).

From the Product History page of the Naim website:
HARD DISK PLAYER / SERVERS
|
Product | Introduced | History/change(s) | Date of change |
---|
HDX | 2008 | 500GB drive update
| 2009 |
HDX | 2008 | BNC update | 2009 |
HDX | 2008 | Version 1.5 software update | 2009 |
HDX | 2008 | RAM and PCI card update | 2010 |
HDX-SSD | 2010 | Solid-strate drive variant added alongside standard model |
Hope it helps.

Thanks Stefano: I did see that and just wanted to confirm that there were no other "production changes" that don't constitute a publishable update.

My first HDX (400GB version) had a different CD drive mechanism than my second HDX (400 GB version, too) - probably not worth mentioning as it seems to be only a very small difference.

From my perspective the significant changes were the 1Tb internal HDD which made a NAS essential for back up. No bad thing IMO but each to their own. Sound card upgrade is said to be an improvement. SSD is also cited as an improvement.
