Best opera singers

Posted by: Alamanka on 04 February 2011

I know nothing about opera.
But thanks to someone on this forum (thank you Edouard), I discovered a few weeks ago the immense talent of CECILIA BARTOLI.
Is it humanly possible to sing better than her? What other ultimate artists have I been missing?

Jussi Bjorling, Federica Von Stade, Giuseppe Di Stefano and Bartoli - not a fan of Callas (way too overwrought for my liking.

Genius! Pure genius! Apparently she had thousands of gays fans who packed Carnegie Hall to go and see her(or laugh) depending on who you believe.

'Can-Belto' is how her singing might be described.....Brings tears to my eyes every time. (I'm a happily married man btw)

Let's not forget another of today's outstanding singers: Simon Keenlyside

I have that Foster-Jenkins CD!  Don't know whether to laugh or cringe but it really is fun to listen to.

EJ,

Thank you for all your suggestions and comments. Regarding "Le Nozze di Figaro", for the time being I really like the version directed by Rene Jacobs (Concerto Koln, Harmonia Mundi). I have yet to hear the version you recommended from Claudio Abado.

I heartily agree with your comments on Netrebko.

Thanks again.

The Jacobs is excellent... and has Simon Keenlyside as the count!
