HDX INternet Radio Failure

Posted by: Stak on 23 July 2013

Hi,

I'm new to the forum but have recently bought new HDX, SNait and HiCap. Everything was working fine until a week or so ago when I have been unable to get Internet Radio on my HDX. I have pasted the body of an email I sent to Steve Hopkins at Naim - he had responded early on but I've had no response to this information I have sent him. I have upgraded to 1.7 following Steve's advice.

Does anyone here have any further ino or advice please?

1. Downloaded and installed 1.7 successfully
2. System status still shows Internet False
3. Installed new Desktop Client on my PC - accessed the HDX over the network fine but also indicates internet Music unavailable.
4. Carried out some routine activities from the DTC over the LAN such as emptying the waste bin and random selections of the music stored on the HDX - all functioned perfectly.
5. Disconnected the HDX RJ45 and plugged it into a Pioneer N-50 network  audio player (thereby using exactly the same physical cable and router port). This tuned quickly into the Internet and played back fine through my SuperNait
6. Powered everything down (using correct protocols) and disconnected all physical connections from the HDX except RJ45 and power.
7. Powered up the HDX - same results.

I suggest that you give the HDX a fixed IP address, which is something you need to do within the router. Set it for something outside of the normal range - eg xxx.xxx.1.110. Then switch off the HDX, turn it on again and it should pick up the new address - you'll be able to check using the setup menu.

If you are using DHCP then most routers will allow you to fix an specific IP address to a specific device. This is most commonly achieved by binding the MAC address of the device to a specific IP address.

If you are not using DHCP, you can set up the HDX to have a fixed IP address - this is done on the front panel of the HDX or through the Desktop client. You need to choose an IP address which does not conflict with any other devices on your network (which is why it is easier to use DHCP)

Whilst changing the IP address might have some effect, I suspect not as I think the HDX uses startup routines to look for specific websites on the web e.g. local Vtuner server, etc. I get the impression that these names are hardcoded into the software and if on start-up they are not found or are down then the HDX will not play Internet radio and will display Internet Accessible = False.

Thank you for your advice. I cannot assign fixed addresses within my o2 router which does use DHCP. However, I deleted all network entries in the router, switched off and switched on again the HDX which came up with the same address as before and with the same negative results. I do not appear to be able to change the IP address on the HDX either through the front panel or the new 1.7 desktop client so I am stuck for the moment. Tomorrow I shall ask my neighbour if I can connect the HDX to his router (using TalkTalk) and see what results I get. I just don't understand how the thing has been working fine until recently - the vTuner Naim interface is working OK according to vTuner.

If your HDX is getting CD info when you rip a CD, then surely you are indeed getting a network & Internet connection?

Have you tried that?

Try this, Stak, you never know... power down the HDX & switch it off at the rear.  Remove & replace the network cable from the HDX.  Power it back up & check the internet status again.

I've seen a network cable work loose from the HDX & make intermittent connection.

It's a long shot, but worth 5 minutes to try.

Yes thanks guys. I get album artwork OK from the internet - tried with a dozen CDs borrowed from my neighbour - works every time. I have downloaded FLAC files on to a PC and transferred them to the HDX perfectly and they play beautifully so network connection is definitely OK.

I have disconnected the RJ45 cable several cables, used different cables and ports on the router. used the same cables and router ports with another (Pioneer N-50) internet radio connection which works fine every time!

I'll keep you posted.

Stak, if you are downloading album art and transferring files to the HDX, your IP address etc is fine.

However I wonder if the DNS setting in the HDX has somehow got mis set and is not being correctly re set with the DHCP process. I guess Naim will check that with you.

Thanks Simon - what is that about 'Great minds.....'

I came to the same conclusion last night so powered down again, disconnected the RJ45, powered up without the network connection to force the default addresses and checked that no DNS  had been assigned. Then powered down again, connected the RJ45 and powered up. Bingo! DHCP reassigned the same old IP address but crucially, the DNS was reset so that the HDX now works as it used to.

Back to listening to a beautiful piece of kit.

Many thanks to contributors - all of which stimulated my thought processes.

Hi Guys

Just returned from holiday, powered up the HDX and got the same old problem. Unfortunately, the fix I applied before (see last post) has failed to work this time (several attempts). The internet connection is fine and I can see the HDX on my network and interact with it. Went to my neighbour and connected to his router with the same negative results. I am fairly sure that the problem is with the DNS setting which displays the MAC address of the router (i.e. same as the Gateway address). Can anyone tell me what DNS address to expect to connect to the vTuner service please?

If there is anyone listening from Naim Support can you give me any advice before I return the HDX. I have to say that I was on the verge of buying a NDS but I'm getting concerned about the fragility of Naim software.

Phone Stephen Hopkins, he should be able to sort it out!

If you look in the relevant place in the router, you will find the DNS address being used. Use the set IP tool to fix it in the HDX. It should not be the same as the MAC.

Stak,

I would recommend to contact Naim support directly (see sticky at top of threads) rather than rely on theM happening to look in the Forum.

E mailing Naim Support gets a very quick response.

Im sure they will be able to dial in to your network and fix what needs to be fixed.
