Questions for ndx users
Posted by: Scooot on 23 July 2013
I am potentially going to move from sb touch to ndx and have a few queries.
1-once set up are they stable(sbt is really reliable)
2-does the remote operate volume on preamp(202)
3-in a 202/200/hicap/napsc system does the ndx work well without the dr upgrade on hicap.
I would be selling the ndac to find ndx so a big step.the other option would be to dr the hicap now and wait till funds build up again for ndx.
Any thoughts.thanks,regards scott.
I can tell you that my NDS is totally, 100% stable. It never loses the network, and if I do shut it off, it always finds my server within seconds.
The NDX will undoubtedly sound different than the Naim Dac you'd replace with it. If possible, try to listen to both in your home before deciding. There is no right or wrong, but you don't need any bad surprises. And the experiences of others won't be all that useful, as it's your unique system in your room, etc etc.
Going along to a new shop opening at the weekend with a few guys from naim demoing some kit.
I have been told a ndx will be available to listen to. If impressed I will ask for home dem for sure.
Thanks,regards scott

My NDX is also completely stable. I have had to reboot it twice since I have had it which I think is 2 years. Each time I had been making changes on my network which must have accounted for the issue. I use mine wired with Asset as the UPNP Server.
The remote doesn't seem to operate the pre-amp volume, there was a long thread on this a year or so back. N-stream does though if you enable system automation and install the link cable.
I used my NDX very successfully with a 202/200/Hicap non DR and NAPSC. I changed to a 282 and then switched the Hicap for a DR version. Each upgrade gave good improvements (particularly the 282) which indicates that the source hadn't 'run out of steam' but the original combination would still satisfy me now.
Hope this helps.
Richard
Yes mate that helps a lot.
Thank,regards scott
IScooot, Richard has pretty well answered, but I'll give my two pennies worth.
1) the NDX is stable now with the later versions of firmware. I use everyday and have to reboot about once every two to three months due to some errant behaviour. In my experience web radio tends to be slightly less reliable than USB, SPDIF, Apple interface and upnp.
2) the remote does operate the 202, but the automation feature is well neat, and allows your NDX via Nstream or it's remote to be a control hub for pre, CD, tuner and DAC with visual feedback via the NDX display.
3) subjectively very much yes, the HicapDR makes the 202 sound more naturally toned, and works well with the ever so slightly warmer than neutral sound of the NDX.

Only having funds to allow for one or the other at present would you say that the first thing that I do is update the hicap to dr.this would in theory improve my system at present allowing to save funds for a potential ndx early next year.if this is the best option I would probably put in my hicap(2008) for a new one.
Thanks again. Regards scott

Are you saying that you can control your preamp volume using the NDX ir remote?
I was told by Naim that this was not possible so I would be very interested and delighted to be able to do this
Richard
Absolutely the naim ndx ir remote controls the pre-amp volume on (my) 282. In fact there is a "fix" for some naim pre-amps in order for the nstream app to do the same...

Richard
Yep... mine controls my 202 just as it did my old 122.
Richard, as others have said as well, yes.
Scooot, if I was in your position, I would indeed probably focus on the HicapDR initially.

Just to add a few comments on my experience:
1. The NDX has been completely stable but I have not had to upgrade the firmware yet. We're a Mac household and I understand that such an upgrade may present some challenges...
2. The remote supplied with the NDX operates my pre-amp volume control (282) exactly as expected but like others I use nstream system automation so I rarely use the remote
3. My system is NDX/non-DR XPS2/282/non-DR HICAP/200 and it sounds fine.
Just as a comment the NDX replaced a CDX2 and I wouldn't go back - though I find the CDX2 clearly more exciting/engaging on some types of music e.g. electronica/rock.
I may try an NDAC but would expect a new model to be released soon as the current spec looks a bit dated.
Thanks all, I have dropped Naim an email regarding the volume control via the NDX remote.
Your words not as exiting/engaging worry me.i will definitely have to have a home dem and see how the ndx performs in my system.i already have the ndac so can do some comparisons.if the choice was as simple as picking a or b exiting and engaging would be my direction of choice.i am going for the dem in the shop at the weekend so I'll take it from there.
At this moment though I think I will take Simon's advise and dr the hicap.doing this will max out what I have.
Thanks again for all the input guys.

Thanks all, I have dropped Naim an email regarding the volume control via the NDX remote.
All resolved, very quick reply (as always) from Steve Hopkins.
To resolve:
Perform the following action, whilst the logo splashscreen is displayed (within first 30 seconds or so after startup)
With remote pointing at NDX
Press: aux, i and 2 buttons on the remote together (at the same time)
The NDX should then say: system code 16
My NDX was ex demo and I wonder if the dealer reprogrammed the remote for some reason to avoid a clash with other equipment.
Apologies Scooot for hijacking your topic.
Richard
No problem mate,glad your sorted.

Scott,
the NDX presentation is growing on me all the time and I may well go down the DR route as well - in my case Supercap DR. If you see my comments on the CDX2 thread I find the NDX more enjoyable to listen to on a wide range of music. I prefer the excitement of the CDX2 on high energy music for shortish periods but am even then aware that the NDX is providing more detail etc and is in many ways 'better'.
A home demo is clearly the way to go. As an alternative you could try a ND5XS and stream to the NDAC (+ power supply if you have budget).
Good luck!
Philip
Cheers for the clarification.i will take all this info on board and get some home dems.i initially thought about the nd5 xs into to my dac.
Reason for being swayed toward the ndx was similar internal dac to the ndac and no extra boxes.
Cheers.
