The Capitol Sessions Naim CD025 distortion

Posted by: blythe on 23 July 2013

I just listened to this album for the first time in a few years and during track 13,  "La Luna Negra" there is noticeable distortion on the piano.

Has anyone else heard the same on this album or is it a sign that my hi-if is becoming poorly or sick?

I have tried turning off the mid, bass & treble amps in turn to identify which frequency is affecting the sound and it seems to be the mid.

I have tried both the CD & the ripped copy on the HDX & both copies are the same.

I have tried various other piano music but have been unable to replicate the distortion.

Has anyone else heard the same on this album?

Hi Blythe,

I have had a good listen to the source material for the track "La Luna Negra" here in the office and can't hear any obvious distortion. Is it specifically the piano or the bass, and can you name a time in the track when it is worst?

Fingers crossed we can get to the bottom of this, and hopefully it is not your Hi Fi!

Regards,

I am away overnight so unable to tell you right away. I will check on my return & report my findings!

Thank you for your message :-)

I can now confirm it is only the piano.

However, having been away for a few days and powered down the system (too many storms over the past week!) when I powered up, there is now a quiet but distinct "sizzling" sound emanating from the mid-range drivers. This might be a problem that's beginning.....

It is clearly time to have the "mid-range" 250 serviced!

I am reasonably confident the service will cure the distortion!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to listen to the office copy!

Hi Martin,

I am sorry to hear that it appears be your system, however if you are happy to wait for a service to be carried out I will hold fire investigating any further. If the service doesn't provide the cure then I would be happy to look into it further in the future.

Best of luck!

Where else on the planet would you read this exchange. This reminds me of something that happened to me.

I had a problem with an Ani Difranco CD To The Teeth years ago.  I ran a REL Strata  5 sub and B& W 705 s at the time.  I thought it was the sub which was distorting terribly.  My dealer was useless.  He would not listen to it so I had to send it to Melboune, that's 1700km, to get it looked at ( my expense if no fault found).

Well they found no fault.  It was Reg Mills hifi in Brisbane ( since closed) an unrelated dealer that tested my CD and found content at very low frequency.  It wasnt  book red book compliant and the little REL struggled to play the LF that other subs didn't even try to reproduce.  Once I knew what the problem was I was happy, but not with that original dealer that sold me the sub and gave me zero support.

Reg Mills showed the difference between poor customer support and superb customer support ( and I wasn't even a customer)
