unitiqute 24/96 ... playing AIFF?

Posted by: Antonio1 on 02 August 2013

hi,

I've bought an exdem 24/96 unit , am streaming music from my macbook pro using eyeconnect and aiff from iTunes work.

Isn't supposed them to play only if wired? anyway this server isn't working properly and stops playing  several times , any hints please?

Hi Antonio

I recommend that you send an email to Naim Customer Service (or ask the dealer who sold you the ex-dem Qute) on this point, quoting the serial number of your Qute.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the 24/96 Qute does not play AIFF files.  Part of the upgrade to the 24/192 Qute was to enable the playing of AIFF files.

In some cases, NAS drives have the ability to transcode from AIFF to WAV, so that your Qute would see WAV files instead.  The 24/96 Qute is naturally fine with WAV.  However, I'm not sure what happens to any metadata when this happens.  Others are much better qualified than I on this point.

Best regards, FT

I found that I could only play AIFF files on my first generation unitiQute if the files were on USB stick and played through the front USB port, otherwise they won't play at all. So it's Flac, Wav or AAC/MP3.

i just use FLAC files stored on a NAS drive.

hi guys and thanks for your replies, just to clarify I'm a total novice of streaming etc.

Anyway I've sent an e-mail to Naim (no answer yet but sure they'll will asap as I believe they're on holiday)about the AIFF, as my unit dates  end of 2012 so maybe it's updated who knows.

Still streaming wireless though at times stops playing, I'm planning to buy a nas (problem is ethernet  cable ,as router isn't in the same room, anyway) would it help there ?

If your files are playing but then stopping then your Qute can handle AIFF files.  Copy some onto a memory stick, plug that into the front USB socket and that will confirm it.

I suspect the issue is with either or both of eyeconnect and your network configuration.  I used eyeconnect running on a Mac for a while and to be honest it was pretty hopeless.  Get that NAS drive as soon as possible!

Oh and is your Qute connected wirelessly or ethernet?

wirelessly ,  BTW Naim confirmed the issue shoul be addressed using ethernet cable either to pc or unitiqute.

That will certainly help. Wireless streaming is a bit hit & miss - if you browse through the threads on this forum you will see that for some people it works but not for others.  The quality of your router makes a big difference (the free ones from Virgin and BT do not have a good reputation) and other factors like the construction of your house and the amount of other wireless activity in your neighbourhood seem to make a difference as well.

I believe you are all missing the elephant in the room here in your replies...

Unless I'm very much mistaken, EyeConnect transcodes files so what your Mac sees as AIFF, your UnitiQute is probably seeing as .wav

I just discovered EyeConnect is a discontinued product so you will probably want to look for an alternative long term ... a NAS or VortexBox server makes an ideal companion to a UnitiQute.  Alternatively try Serviio or Minimserve on your Mac.

Years ago I started with EyeConnect - free but broken.

I'm a huge Vortexbox advocate but you may well find that Minimserver is what you need as it runs brilliantly on a Mac and can transcode files to wav very effectively. To my ears it sounds very very good on Naim streamers.

excuse my ignorance but...

If I get a NAS, soundwise, is it better than a good  optical cable running from my mac to qute?

That way I'd avoid the file conversion a NAS would in any case be compelled to do ?

What's the best and user friendly suggestion ,please?

In theory it should make no different.  It is just two different ways of getting bits to the Qute.  Personally my advice would be go whatever is most convenient for you.  The advantage of the NAS route sending bits to the Qute from it's uPnPserver through an ethernet network is that you don't need the boxes close together and you can use the NAS for other types of file store.

But you will have a different user interface, eg nStream controlling the NAS uPnP rather than whatever goes with the player software you would have on the Mac (eg iTunes and Remote).  Personal preference as to which of those you prefer.

tx , I'll be thinking about that carefully.

I'd be inclined to get a NAS though,as proving more useful for future usage as storage, no cable needed , even though I'll have to convert to flac.
