Unitiserve back ups for dummies and other operations
Posted by: maze on 06 August 2013
Just got my userve back from repair including a new 2tb HD, is there anywhere I can access a simple dummies version to back this up and transfer files to the download folder?
Using desk top client looks nothing like in the manual, please help before i go back to cd's.
Life's too short for all this messing about, I just wanna play some tunes for cryin' out loud.
If you go to the IP address of the Serve, the web interface will appear. Then follow the instructions in the US manual to set up your NAS as a music store. It is a bit fiddly, and irritating that you do some things in the DTC and other things in the web interface. I bought a Mybook as my backup, and can't get on with it, so I've ordered a Synology, so will have to start the whole painful process again. You have my sympathy!!
Thanks hungry, I too have a my book live, ho dear.
Maze what kind of home computer do you use?
For transferring files to the Downloads folder, you just copy and paste to that folder the same way you'd copy files to any folder on your computer, or onto your nas.
You just need to be able to see the uServe in either 'file manager' (Windows) or Finder (Mac OS X). Then it's just copy and paste, drag and drop, etc.
Bart, yes done that now seems the easiest way. I am running a windows pc. Difficulty in initiating a backup Though. Thanks.

Maze the backup process is a little less intuitive!
The usermanual for the uServe does set out the process, and if you follow that it works.
From memory, the basic steps are:
Create a new 'shared folder' on your nas. Best to create a new folder on your nas, and make sure that nas designates it as a 'shared folder' meaning other network devices can access it. My nas can create unshared or shared folders; maybe your nas only creates shared folders -- I don't know.
Go to the DTC and have it scan for new shares . . . . the DTC should find that new shared folder and add it to the list of 'shares.'
In the DTC, select that new share for use as a backup. There is a 'button' for this.
Then in the DTC, use the Backup utilities to select that new backup, and set up a recurring backup schedule, or carry out a one-time backup. You also have the option of making each backup "full" (total re-write, and it takes quite a while) or "incremental" (better choice, as it only backs up what's been added since the last backup).
In theory that's it!
I'm having a lot of trouble also it's driving me nuts,
Just bought a WD MyBook Live to use to back up my 1TB Unitiserve,
I have followed all the instructions but can't seem to be able to use the Nas as a back up,
Keep getting the message on the US web interface "Unable to convert share to music back up"
On step 2 of "Add a new music back up" it finds the right share but under the Status column it says Disabled? How do I enable it?
Using a Mac any help would be most grateful before I go crazy,

Is it a newly created folder you're trying to make a backup? That's important.
I think that "disabled" is the right setting -- if a folder is "enabled" as a share, it cannot be used as a backup (I THINK). Others will know (I'm not at home in front of my computer).
Bart, Thanks for the reply,
Yes it's a newly created folder on the Nas,
When I select the share on the US web interface I get the message " Unable to convert share to music back up"
Any ideas people....all I want to do is back up my US how hard can it be??
Allen B, thanks for you're reply & time,
Both my Nas & US have fixed IP address I reserved the address on the router,
I can enable the folder under Manage Network Shares on the US & I have refreshed it seeing the green enabled spot,
No passwords & I can read & write to the share,
But still when I try & use that share as a back up still getting the message "Unable to convert share to music back up" this is when I try & set up a new music back up on the US,
Spent the last 48 hours trying to get this to work any help people...thanks...
Goonerdude i sympathise here, this is just too much hassle for me to want to bother. Can't believe this is so incredibly difficult to achieve. Not being familiar with pc speak makes it more difficult for me than your average joe. I don't want to spend anymore time trying to get this to back up, life too short. Almost makes we want to go back to playing CDs. It's a pleasure these days to put a vinyl record on, no back up to worry about, no hard drive failure to worry about. And this is the future of hi fi, hmm.
Allen, I suspect that the Naim device looking for a specific IP address and not the network name of the nas has something / a lot to do with this issue. Obviously just a guess on my part, but I think you're on to something there ![]()
Thanks Alanb, thanks Bart. I will pysche myself up ready for another session at the weekend. It all makes sense to why it's not working, I'll give it another shot. Rome wasn't built in a day!
Maze, I have NOT set up everything as recommended, with a static ip address from my router, etc. The IP address of my nas does not seem to change, but, over this coming weekend I will finally dig in and do all of Allen's recommendations, reboot everything, make some new shares, etc., and see if that solves "it."
