What Naim streamer

Posted by: steven2907 on 06 August 2013

Hi all I have a 2007 supernait powering sbl mk2s via nac a5...., I am looking to add a naim streamer as I like the ease that they offer having owned a uniti,, I obviously realise that the most expensive should be the best but!!! I can not afford the Nds..

What are your thoughts..

Ndx

Nd5xs

Thanks

Get an NDX, it's better and is the same size as the Supernait so will look better too.

ND5XS effectively has the same DNA internals as NDX and there are no night and day differences in sound quality to my ears. The NDX has more casework, probably a larger psu transformer and some electronic components are connected slightly differently to the circuit boards - other than that, the ND5 is effectively an NDX is a slimline XS series case. Whether the larger Classic series casework brings any audible benefits ..? ....  but I can't say that it sounds £1000 better

Perhaps either streamer fed into the Naim DAC will definitely sound exactly the same

ND5XS is excellent

If it was maximum value for money you were after then I'd be tempted to use a UnitiQute in digital out mode into your SN digital in. Sure you might lose a little quality from the SN DAC, but I think the UQ in streaming only mode should be very close to NDX. I demoed UQ against my NDX last weekend and couldn't hear much difference between them. Admittedly I didn't have a DAC to run them both into, instead using a digital in on the NDX, but the UQ still sounded great that way.

Hello Steven,

I made my choice based on the price of streamer incl. psu because I knew what a difference the psu makes with naim. I only could afford nd5 + xp5 so that is what I bought and it sounds great. So if you are tempted to upgrade, my advice is to look at your total budget.

I did not demo the ndx.

You should listen to both - you might prefer the ND5XS over the NDX. The NDX is more HiFi, I find the ND5XS more musical - if maybe flatter sounding in an A/B session.
