HDX Recently added music in "downloads" not showing on N-Serve
Posted by: blythe on 19 August 2013
I have a number of songs which were added to the "downloads" folder over the past week but they do not show on N-Serve.
However, they are clearly shown in the HDX "downloads" folder in "Finder" on my Mac.
All my older "download" music files show and are playable. I've seen N-Serve "synchronise" so don't think it's just that it hasn't synced. Also, some of the folders were uploaded several days ago.
Any ideas why I can't find and play them on the HDX?
There are a few possibilities.
First, realize that putting the folders into the Downloads folder is only step one. They have to be (2) indexed by the HDX, and then (3) the data has to be pushed out to (or pulled by) n-Serve in your iPhone/iPad. Your problem could lie in (2), or (3).
One possibility is that they've been indexed by the HDX, and just are not showing up in n-Serve (which I assume is on an iDevice). Do they also not show up in n-Serve for OS X on your Mac? If they do not show up either place, it is safe to assume that they've not been indexed at all. If they show up in one but not the other, they've been indexed and it's simply a matter of clearing the cache on the device where they are not showing up.
If they are not showing up either place, they likely have not been indexed at all. (In which case the 'synchronized' message you see in n-Serve is irrelevant. That message means that n-Serve has synched with the HDX, not that the HDX has indexed what you've added!) Why might they not have been indexed? Again, several possibilities. If it's ALL of the new content, it sounds like the HDX is just not seeing it. Force a re-scan of the Downloads share. Sometimes it takes more than one scan. Is the new content in some nested folders? Sometimes the more levels of folders, the harder it is for the server to find it it seems to me. If it's just SOME of the new content songs, it could be that there are characters in the folder name or file name that prevents the server from indexing it. I have had this issue several times, and now make sure that only very basic alphanumeric characters are in the folder and file names. And even non-standard characters in the flac 'tags' can prevent indexing! I use a third party tag program to check the tags before I move the files into the Downloads folder. For example, lots of people put the > character in Grateful Dead song title tags to denote that the song morphs into the next song without the band having stopped. The Naim server chokes on that character. I have also downloaded some files from the B&W site that had non-standard-in-English characters in the titles that the name server did not like and caused indexing to fail. I've even had an invisible 'rogue' character in folder names that caused the folders not to be indexed -- it took Phil Harris to find that one for me!
I hope this helps,
Bart
Bart seems to have covered all the bases. I was going to say 'look at the system messages' in the desk top client (under Tools) - there's where you'll see if there are any 'rogue' characters in the file name that are stopping the indexing working.
'Bon chance' as they sometimes say in Salisbury !
Thanks for that Bart - the newer songs are not showing at all on any idevice (Macbook, iPad, iPhone) so I guess the HDX hasn't indexed them. I'll now try and work out how to force a re-scan :-)

Even with no issues with my files, my uServe (similar enough to the HDX for this discussion) sometimes does not pick up changes the first scan thru. You can force a re-scan from either the web interface or n-Serve for OS X. Just find the screen that shows the Shares, select your Downloads share, and click "rescan" (I think that's how it's labeled).
I tried to find anything that said "re-scan" but couldn't find anything?
In the end, I shut down the HDX & re-started it, then my N-Serve showed all my "downloads" from the last couple of weeks
Not sure what setting I should have been looking for but couldn't find it....
See the "rescan" button? That's it. (Zoom in so you can see it on the right. I've highlighted my Downloads share.)
It took me a few minutes to find how to access "maintenance" but I got it eventually
Many thanks for your help - I'll bear it in mind next time I can't find my music!
For the record, it's mostly old recordings from the radio that I have digitised and copied to the "downloads" folder, so not actually "downloads".
Blythe I had the same experience the first time I ran n-Serve for OS X. I only saw the "library" menu and was sorely disappointed that the maintenance functions were omitted. But I found them, and you now have too I vastly prefer n-Serve on OS X to the DTC on Windows.
You're welcome and I'm glad you "found" your music!
There are other hidden gems, such as right-clicking on a cd you've ripped for access to the menus to edit the metadata and album art, or to make an MP3 copy of the files (which goes into the LQ folder on your music store).
