New or second hand?

Posted by: phil. S on 20 August 2013

I am lucky enough to have £2k to buy a streamer and I already have an XPS2 to partner it with. Can't make up my mind whether to go for a new ND5XS or a second hand NDX....what would you choose?
My amp is a Nait XS.

Get the best you can afford.  Given the choice, I'd go for the NDX.

+1.  Buying gently used Naim is a great way to go.  And owning the best source you can afford is always pleasing.  There is no such thing as "too good" a digital source IMHO.  I would pick the second-hand NDX.  Just buy from a seller you trust, either a dealer or an individual you can verify is honest about the history and condition of the unit.  If from an individual, get a photo of the serial # and verify its year of production on the Naim website so that you are sure its age has been accurately stated. Then . . . . ENJOY!

I would also go for the ndx. I always used to buy new but my recent second hand purchase has allowed me to really jump up the ladder and I haven't regretted it. You can even email naim with the serial number and they can give you the full history of the unit so you'll feel even happier with your purchase

Hi,
Looking at a streamer myself at the moment.i think buying second hand will throw up some great deals.if I was to go down the second hand route i would definitely buy from a dealer.this way you would get the after sales service and most importantly set up help if needed.
Just look at the many posts on the streaming forum at the issues people are facing mostly with software issues.if you by from joe blogs of the usual sites your on your own apart from the forum members.having said that, with the wealth of knowledge they have I'm sure they would be able to solve any problems.
Good luck

Have you heared on of them?

What I would choose, based on my personal experience, is the NDX in a blink.

It is considerably in front of the ND5 and not miles behind the NDS. According to my ears.

Your ears may tell you different. But in your position this is what I would do.

All the best with it.

Keep in mind that the 5 years warranty are gone if you buy 2nd hand!

Thanks for your thoughts guys, always appreciated. I to was leaning towards the NDX.

I have purchased both new and secondhand Naim kit in the past without any problems. Its just a case of doing your homework on the seller. Also, I have never had any Naim equipment fail on me in over 15 years so, to me, the lack of a warranty is not a problem.

NDX it is then! (obviously after a good listen)

Cheers guys.
