RS232-USB

Posted by: Jon Myles on 20 August 2013

Sorry, I know this has been addressed on the forum but for the life of me I cannot find it.

Is there any particular make/model of RS232 to USB lead needed to implement the latest Uniti firmware upgrade via a Mac?

This will be the first time I have upgraded the original Uniti.

Any help gratefully received.

Hi Jon,

The documentation provided with the software suggests cables that employ one of two recommended chipsets.  Download the updater package and view the pdf instructions.  If you go on Amazon you can find such cables.

There are lots of cheap imitations on ebay so try to buy from a reputable supplier. I have bought cheap ones before and they actually has counterfeit chips in them that are supposedly genuine parts but don't actually work properly with the drivers! they went straight in the bin. I have previously purchased quality adaptors from the usbnow uk website (note: not an official recommendation, just my experience)

This is really a pain. Perhaps Naim can consider retrofitting these RS232 units with USB? Another approach is to either through working with a reseller in identifying a specific RS-232 product which these customers can order or sourcing for one and establishing a Naim accessory product/tool for which customer can purchase at a small cost.

I bought one of the jobbies from the usbnow website (per TJ's "experience") and it works fine.  Have done multiple upgrades now on a Uniti and a Qute and no issues.  For me spending the tenner on one of those was less aggro than the disruption and expense of shipping them back to Salisbury to get the RS232 to usb upgrade.

Many thanks for the replies. I know what to order now.

I was worried enough about doing the update from the original software (skipping one or two updates) without having a cheap cable with the wrong drivers.

I bought one from maplin, which worked a treat with a pc but haven't had any look with my mac. This might be me though, perhaps i'll give it another try with the mac when another update xomes along.

As per recommendations, I have ordered the correct cable. (I hope!)

I am assuming here that the latest firmware update can be done via a Mac, even if no other updates have been applied. The PDF doesn't say it cannot so I believe it should be OK.

Hello,

It will also be my first homemade upgrade.

I bought yesterday a cable of very good quality, Aten UC-232A (http://www.aten.com/products/p....php?model_no=UC232A).

However, after having installed the drivers, and when trying to connect il to the UnitI, I just realised with horror that I cannot fix it because of the 2 little screws on each side. So I don't know what to do now. Is there a way to unfix the 2 little fixings of the RSX232 block on the Uniti? What else should I do ? There seems do be a question of male / female type which I did not read on the Naim technical notification.

Thanks for your help, it's very frustrating....

Had same problem when I went to do my upgrade, solution was a trip to maplin and purchase an extension cable with male plug at one end female at other, all pins conected straight through. All good now update trouble free

Thanks for the answer, I will try this and will let your know. I think anyway that Naim could be more precise on the information given on hardware requirements...

Hello,

I bought a male/female RS-233, and with this plus my cable I could update my Uniti with no difficulty. The most cumbersome part was finally to find the right cable and install the drivers correctly. It means that for the next updates, it will be much easier.

So should the cable be male or female?

On my Qute those two little fixings for screws on either side of the RS232 actually unscrew as well - I undid them with narrow pliers. They're clearly designed to come out, I wasn't doing anything risky. You may find the same. Once they were out the connection fitted fine, and I just screwed them back in afterwards.

all the comments are very interesting if the Naim machine you use has a RS 232 socket on the back what if you have a NDS that now has a mini USB for updating the connector it is very hard to buy a RS232 to mini usb or even a normal usb and use a lead to convert usb to mini  I now think Naim should supply this lead I require with the purchase of the NDS  some body help I am in Thailand and so hard to buy the correct lead I need  I will ask Naim to supply this lead to help me or do I use mini usb to usb instead of the RS 232?? I don't want to fry something and then have to send the NDS back to the Uk expensive and difficult .Who else has a NDS and has done the update to 3.22.003 please help

John, see my post on the 'still shows 3.21' thread. All will be clear.
