No Servers, UPnP Compatibility Mode confusion...

Posted by: hafler3o on 24 August 2013

Today I took possession of a SuperUniti, connected it in wired mode, updated the unit it replaced (UnitiQute2) to 3.21, and successfully connected it wirelessly upstairs, I should be happy but it's now 1:30AM and I can't get n-stream to work properly any more.

In the past I'd occasionally get a 'no server' message when navigating the folder tree (I use a WD MyBookLive with Twonky 5.1.9) and have to toggle the Compatibility option in s-stream settings to 'green blob' (whether that means enabled/disabled I can't say). The behaviour of the app. degrades, becomes less intuitive but at least it limps along, rather than just stalling (if left in 'white blob' mode).

Tonight I've been totally unable to get the 'normal' app functionality, despite power resets, static address assignments etc. The Qute and Uniti read the NAS ok, they both navigate & play different stuff at the same time under r/c command, but the Naim app. refuses to acknowledge the network storage unless in green blob UPnP comp. mode (which is frankly slow and weird). Has anyone got any ideas, or shall I delete the app. and just use the r/c in folder mode like I used to before an iPad mini turned up.

Did you install the new version of nStream?

Good morning Hook! I believe so, (3.4.7079)

I've installed the Qute upstairs wirelessly and I can now listen to The Cure downstairs whilst Sue listens to Adele upstairs, at the same time!!

Unfortunately the app continues to do bizzare things, like start the right album half way through, or the wrong album in the same folder at the beginning. Nothing works at all when I select the white blob from UPnP comp. mode in the app. settings (which is what I used to have selected).

Both remotes do the right things on the right machines. I'm going to uninstall the app. then reinstall. Then for good measure power-down everything internet related and see what that may accomplish

Hafler,

I believe you need a separate instance of n-stream for each device. See FAQ under multi-room.

I email directly with Naim engineers and it seems some NAS servers that work with Twonky no longer work with the new Naim apps of N-stream unless the Compatibility option is chosen, hence given up the "playlist" or " queue" functions. I'm using the Buffalo Linkstation and thats exactly whats going on. I wish Naim could fix this issue with their next bug fix please !

Hi Andy, where might I find that? I've read through the Naim Streamer Multiroom Supplement and can't find any mention of it there, I didn't know I could add a second identical app. to an iPad!

I've not attempted to connect the two via any multiroom functionality yet. Just run them independently in different locations.

Also I've just deleted the app. reinstalled it, and guess what? The "white blob comp. mode" is back and working for the SU. What does it signify when white anyway, on, off, up, disabled?

OK Andy I've found what you are referring to, in the Knowledge Base.

The answer does include the following though "...The n-Stream app can connect to only one Uniti or ND series product at any one time. However, you can switch between multiple devices using a single instance of the app."

With the app recognising the server I can do this right now, swap between the devices, control music selections etc. The problem was that until I completely uninstalled the app. it would not do anything much this morning. I'm wondering if there's some way to 'zap' the app so it kind of starts over without having to uninstall/reinstall/reconfig. devices?

@kyoto: It might be worth doing a manual Twonky update to 7.x.x (you will need to purchase a license key to get it going) if you get no luck at all with your system, mine seems to occasionally go into "No Server" dumb-ass mode and a reinstall has fixed it today, I might just get a UnitiServe, anyone got a kind word about them?

thanks Hafler3o. I've never installed any Twonky software into my network. The buffalo LinkStation has it's own firmware and it caters for Twonky itself (I assumed). But constant firmware updates are done on the Buffalo website download. Hence, I don't even know how to update the Twonky on the network.

Ah, the old 'I won't recognise a  device unless it's there when I arrive' line. Good to hear it's sorted. And I'd misread the info about switching between devices so thanks. Just need to get Mrs Andy to let me have her old ipodTouch now and I'm in business.

I'm no expert but there are good forums on how to do geeky stuff with Twonky, I was hoping you could have a go first then advise me

Well, I've been at work but my wife's been playing and navigating all morning / afternoon and she's failed to upset n-stream (a small miracle) I think you could be right Andy with the 'timing criticality' of the n-stream app and adding additional sources.
