Internet Radio - Help my Dad Please!

Posted by: GraemeH on 25 August 2013

My dad is keen to get access to the worlds radio stations like I can through the HDX.

He is a total novice, without even an internet connection to the house yet.

He does have a Musical Fidelity 308 integrated into B&W 803 and so he'd like to run it through that. He'd also like the ease of use of a screen interface, like the iPad, so that he can browse without squinting!

Could I have some simple step by step advice that I could guide him through please? What does he need to get from whom for a few hundred pounds if possible?

He is with BT for his land line just now.

Many thanks,

Graeme

Graeme, I would think that something from a laptop or iPad directly into his integrated would be easiest.  It may not have the best fidelity possible but if it's good enough, that sure would be simpler than a lot of alternatives.

The simplest would be a patch cord from the mini headphone out of the laptop or iPad into the aux in of the integrated.  You can get a mini stereo to dual RCA patch cord.  That at least would get him started.

The next level of improvement would, I think, be a USB dac.  Laptop >USB dac>integrated.

I'm looking forward to hearing what others might recommend.

Thanks - so that's a BT broadband modem/router or some such to be installed first I'm assuming. This provides a wireless network for the iPad.

Is their an internet radio menu as an app? How do you access the navigation to all the stations?

Then a mini headphone to phono lead into the integrated.

I need to be able to tell him in simple terms!

Thanks again,

Graeme

Tunein Radio is a good app that is available at the Apple AppStore. Worth a look.

As mentioned justo run a lead from the 3.5mm jack to the amp. Easy.

And TuneIn Radio is also available free if you're using a web browser on a computer.

G if using a laptop I can highly recommend the Arcam rPac.USB dac with phono or headphone output and at £150 not to bad on price.

Thanks - I think an iPad will be his chosen device. G

iPad using the free N-Serve app will give you access to all the music on the HDX plus allow you to choose which ever radio station you want on the HDX. (from the available list of stations).

Easy to browse, clear and no squinting

Oops, just re-read and saw "like I can on my HDX".....

An iPAD and a Apple Airport express would seem to be the simplest solution.

With the Airport express you can listen to anything you can listen to on the iPAD through the hifi.

Tune-in radio, iPlayer radio, podcast, all streamable to the main rig.

It seems senseless to buy a PC for someone who has never had internet in the house. an iPAD is much more intuitive and will do everything that your Dad is likely to do on a PC. My iPAD has made my laptop redundant.

Hi John - Are you saying that he could then stream wirelessly to the Musical Fidelity 308 from the iPad via the Airport express? How does that work then? G

First step obviously is to get a internet connection in the house with wifi reception in the listening room.

then set up the iPAD on this network.

plug in airport express close to the music fidelity and plug it into a power socket and connect audio out to Music Fidelity input. I have an old one which uses RCA, current models seem to use headphone jack size output.

There is an ipad app to set up the airport express.

then when listening to anything on the iPAD there is a little airplay symbol near the volume control, click this and choose airport express and hey presto sound now coming out of music fidelity.

(I had to physically connect the airport to the modem via ethernet to initially set it up but I don't think this step is needed now)

I used airport express for streaming from my iPod and MacBook before I got my HDX.

The Airport Express will need setting up to connect to the wifi and stream music and you will need a computer for that initial setup.

Also, I had to use ethernet to set mine up properly (Airport Express has an Ethernet port) so take a laptop & ethernet cable with you to set it up Grahame!

from apple site

With AirPort Express, getting your new Wi-Fi network up and running takes less time — and less effort — than making a cup of tea. That’s because a setup assistant is built into iOS and into AirPort Utility for OS X. And if you use a Windows PC, you can download AirPort Utility for free. As soon as you plug in your AirPort Express Base Station and connect it to your DSL or cable modem, you can follow the simple instructions on your computer or iOS device. There are no complicated steps to follow and no obscure terminology to learn. The setup assistant does all the work, so you don’t have to.

i don't think there is a need for  laptop but a ethernet cable seems necessary.

Graeme,

Good luck, I have to do something similar for my old man so this thread is useful.

Don't forget the Radio Paradise ap for the iPad which is very good.

He is a jazz & blues - especially guitarists - fan and listens to 'classical' too so any recommended stations gratefully explored!

Cheers,
